My 97 F150 headlight lenses have "yellowed" over time, making the lights very dim at night. Has anyone else encountered this and is there a resolution to the problem other than buying a whole new assembly?

I know there are some kits out there that you can use that are supposed to help. I belief it is basically a plastic rubbing/buffing compound. You buff off the outer layer of discolored plastic leaving you clear plastic underneath. I know there are some $19.95 kits, but there are some good kits that I would try instead. I have seen them used on Motorweek on tv, in the Goss's garage segment. I personally have never used them, but I know that the Ford pickups of that era have this problem often.
Good luck, Dave

Here is an example:

Maguire's "cleaner wax" not only does a nice job on the car/truck's paint, but will clean the cloudy lens in a few minutes with some elbow grease. Maguire also make a plastic polish that would clean them to "like-new" condition, but it can be rather difficult to find (I've cleaned 30 year old faded tail light lenses & plastic dash lenses with the plastic polish & they came out looking like new, plus did a Dodge mini van headlights with the cleaner wax last year & in only a minute, literally one minute, it made a considerable improvement).

Mother's Aluminum Wheel Polish. Recommend by Chrysler for this problem. Takes just a few minutes. It takes the haze off.

Good luck... we have 2 older ford products with this problem.. our dealer ordered some 'magig goop' kit to do what has been said.. didn't effect them... hope you have better luck..

A local body shop is restoring them for $25.00 per lens- his before and after are pretty impressive.

Sam Memmolo on "2 Guys Garage" used toothpaste to buff the head lights clear. I haven't tried it at home yet on my '98 Explorer but it worked on TV! :D

YES!

Toothpaste is great for refinishing all types of plastics!
