I've read a bunch of posts here about how folks are handling fueling. Sounds like the 5 gallon can is really not ideal...

While I've read some good suggestions here, since I've got a diesel truck, it seems to make sense to use this rolling resource of fuel; it would be much simpler than transporting tanks/drums, and the fuel would always be fresh. Red fuel is not close by, so there's no money to be saved by using some other seperate supply source.

I saw this 12V transfer pump at Northern Tools - looks pretty slick, I could just drop the supply line down one of my tanks and fill up the tractor.

Anyone have any experience with this unit?

Bought that exact pump and made the mistake of pumping some dirty fuel out of a 500 gallon tank. I was trying to empty it. Had cheesecloth wrapped around the filter for extra protection but there evidently was way too much debris in the fuel. It did what it was suppose to the day I used it. Let a friend borrow it a couple of months later and it locked up immediately.

Not to say it's a bad pump, just don't try what I did with it.
Should work fine. Just stay off the bottom of the tank.

The only problem with this idea is you are using fuel off road and paying the higher on road price for it.

Unless there is a screen in the tank filler pipe.

I saw in Nothern a very cool 10 tank with a pump. I beleive it was on clearance for $100.

Just a followup on this unit...in short, it works great.

That being said, the supply line is a very tight fit down the tank. If anyone else is thinking about going this route, you're probably OK if it's a realtively straight shot down your filler neck to your truck tank. If you have a few bends, it might not be so easy.

The supply line just barely clears the nozzle restrictor in the fill neck. Also, it works much better with the pump sitting lower than the supply tank. The manual says it can draw up to 6 feet, but the fueling hose is plenty long enough to reach the tractor tank from the ground. With it on the ground, I filled up the tank in well under a minute, no drips, no muss, no fuss.

Rather than clip the leads onto the tractor battery every time, I'll probably pick up a waterproof 12V outlet/plug and replace the aligator clips for quicker and easier hookup.
