The problem is you're using Massey Ferguson Four Wheel Drive (MFFWD) on a JD.

additionaly, I noticed last evening that when dis-engaging the MFWD it seems to be somewhat stiff? It remains stiff until i slowly move in reverse then it seems to disengage slowly? Has anyone else notice this or do you simply yang it back into 2wd?

That's generally normal. All of my JD's have do that and you just need to reduce load before shifting in and out of MFWD. Try stopping to engage it although sometimes it does not want to engage in neutral either.

Yep it can be stiff to disengage if for any instance when there is some load on the driveline. Like if you are on a hill or if moving (under load, not coasting), or if the wheels are turned sharply. Just get it to a nice neutral situation and it should disengage easily. To a degree, The same can be said for engaging the system as well.
