Tiller Yet another tiller question (will it fit?)

A friend offered for free, a 48" JD tiller.

Trouble is, it's a 12 hour drive one way to pick it up (NJ-Bar Harbor, Me).

Before I commit to taking it, I need to know if it'll fit my JD 4400.

Serial # on the tiller is: M02902X538226 (any idea what year this is?).

I'm told it fits a 318, 420 & 430.

Being new to the board, & new to tractors, I have no idea what this tiller, or the recommended tractors, look like (anyone have a pic?). All I use the 4400 for is mostly cutting the 5+ acres of field around the house (Before the house was finished, neighbors called the police & complained about the over-grown field which had sat fallow for at least 8 years prior. Nice, eh?) & moving a little dirt. We have a tiny vegetable plot now (maybe 150 sq ft?), but with a tractor mounted tiller, I'd love to have one much larger (1500 sq ft at least).

So, should I do this deal, or keep my eyes open for a tiller more appropriately matched to my tractor?

My brother & I have built so many Mopars in the last 3 decades, there's not much we DON'T know about them (my specialty is 66-67 Chargers & 68-69 Darts), but when it comes to these tractors & accessories, I feel like a RANK AMATEUR!

I use a 4' tiller behind my 'bota L3400. It does not fit well but any means. I have to loosen the 3pt lift arms to the point where it almost feels ridiculous (they point in quite a bit) but it works. I got a 4' tiller so that I could do small areas as well as big areas. My tractor surely overpowers this tiller but I haven't broken it yet.

Check the PTO speed. I did some research before I bought a used Howard Tiller 48" for my JD 2210. I think the JD 318 Ect PTO spins at a much higher speed than 540 rpm. I could be wrong, I just remember reading that somewhere. My 2210 will run the 48" Howard no problem, just the tiller is geared for a 540 rpm input.

I see this thread is pretty stale, but thought I'd add my 2 cents from some things I've learned over the last few months of research. I have a JD2520 CUT and have also been looking for a heavy duty L&G tractor and was hoping to share some implements including a tiller. Here is what you hopefully have already learned:
1) Those tractors are are all 80/90's's L&G tractors and the PTO's are 2000 RPM (vs your 4400 CUT's's 540 RPM).
2) The 2000RPM PTO's rotate in the opposite direction from CUT's
3) They had category 0 3 point hitch's vs the CUT's category 1 (all different spacing and pin sizes).
4) Those L&G tractor's have about 12-16 PTO hp vs maybe 30 on your 4400. You would probably tear that tiller apart.

Bottom line as I hope you have found you DON"T want that tiller.
