I'm a first-time tractor owner with little to less prior experience. Please excuse any incorrect jargon or simple thinking. (At my very first posting, I was politely scolded for doing some adventurous and ill-considered experimentation.)

YM 1401 with several attachment including bush hog and tiller.

After working fine for several weeks the hyraulic operated erratically and not operating at all. Both front end loader and 3 point.

My buddy at work with plenty of experience with heavy equipment suspect either air in the line, dirty filter or broken pump. He also tells me (and I'm kind of skeptical) that I may have cause the problem by changing out the hydraulic fluid... the new fluid may have dislodged sludge. "If it ain't broke, it will be"

So:
1) Is this where the filter is located? (see image... right side in front of rear wheel)
2) Is removal and cleaning of filter self-explanatory or special knowledge needed?
3) Any tips, hints, chants or suggestions on diagnosing and repair?
3) What to do?

Yes, that is it. Yanmar Tractor Parts: HYDRAULIC_SYSTEM If you didn't clean it at last fluid change no doubt it needs it. You will need to drain the fluid before pulling screen. This is a cleanable screen, acts as your filter. I would start here and if the screen is not dirty then start looking other places for your trouble.

Thanks... that what I needed to get me started.

Also, thanks for the link.

I'll report back on results.

Yes, your hydraulic screen is there. I have a YM169D which is the domestic model of your 1401. When cleaning the screen, I used a small bucket and had it 1/4 full of Diesel. Then I scrubbed it by hand until it looked pretty clean and used the air compressor to blow the rest of the junk and debris out. Then just slide it back in place and you are good to go again. I have attached a few pictures for reference, you will need to remove the right rear tire to get to it, it makes the job so much easier because it puts the filter locating in a great spot to get to. If the filter is plugged then it can stop the fluid from passing through so that could be behind your hydraulic problem. If it is the pump, it takes a little more time to remove, i have removed mine.

Well... cleaning the filter seemed to have done the trick! It now works!

Thanks Johndeere3720! Exactly what I did.

Good photos!

Of course, just like any home repairs... when you start, you discover other stuff you didn't want to find! Minor, I guess. From previous owner apparently. One of the bolts never fully tightened. Dosen't seem to leak, but probably needs to be fixed. This will be my next web search.
