Yanmar YM1600
So I got a ym1600 the other day. The guy i got it from said he ran it out of gas then couldn't get it started again. Looks like he at least attempted to bleed it. My problem is I can't get it to turn over. I assumed he burnt up the starter cranking it. So I took it out and bench tested it. It pops but no spin. Then I took it apart and wires and lotsa rust fell out so the windings are shot. Where do I find a starter for this thing? Are there any other engines that use the same starter? Also I can't seem to find any glow plugs or wires going to glow plugs. Any help or info on this tractor would be awesome. Thankyou for your time.

All the Elec. brushes are gone and the wires to them are huge. The Yanmar Motor for the YM1600 is a SM-146 from Fredricks. That is the same starter I use on a YM2000. Models 1600,1700,1900,2000 use it. I had to rebuild it for the same reason you are. They carry most all the replacement parts. Armature, Brush plate Etc...

The last time I needed an oddball starter I went to a local starter repair shop. It wasn't as odd as I thought. The shop ordered a replacement and I had it in a week. It was made in Mexico instead of Japan but it fit and worked fine.

Thermostart is an electric manifold heater that takes the place of glow plugs. Widely available because they were used on many brands back then, and are on Ebay under $20. I think the only difference between version is whether the wire attaches by a screw or a slide-on terminal - and the screw can be discarded to slide on the later type of connector.

This device has a heater like a car's cigarette lighter and a temperature sensitive valve to dribble warm fuel into the intake manifold. You can test whether the existing Thermostart gets warm when current is applied. Earlier Yanmars had a dashboard button for this, then later models twisted the key left to energize it.

And that starter, IF is is the same as YM2000, YM240 etc is widely available. I see listings on Ebay under $100 but I didn't check Amazon. I bought one of these third-party (China) starters 20 years ago and it still works like new.

Yanmar used a lot of Denso and Hitachi electrical components that also appear on Datsun, Subaru. Mazda etc so the components are available to rebuild existing starters but I think replacing it is a better choice.

The YTOG has the manuals for your machine for free. It will help you find a starter and other parts.

As for bleeding the fuel system, Aaron has a great YT video on this.

Wow. All you guys really gave me alot of good information. I really appreciate it. I know what to look for now or maybe I'll rebuild it myself. Being this is my first tractor I'll probably have a bunch more questions in the future. I've never used a forum so if I'm not doing it right please tell me. Hate to ruin what seems to be a good resource to have.

You're doing it right. Don't be bashful about asking anything.

I and many others started here with exactly the same question: "My first tractor. What do I need to know?". Some of us stuck around to encourage each succeeding generation of new owners.

Plus there are a few folks who owned these when they were first imported, nearly 50 years ago. Their advice is profound.

Welcome aboard!

Are you talking about the Facebook group?

Are you talking about the Facebook group?
NOPE. They don't offer free manuals and nor do they have nearly 2,793 members like we do.
Plus try searching for anything on the FB group, it is a major pain.

The YTOG link is below in my signature in big print. :D
