All,

So, after draining, cleaning, and refilling my transmission and transmission filter I went to start my YM1610D and it would not start. It started the week before, but now the starter will not engage the flywheel.
What I've done:
- Charged the battery & used fresh external
- Pulled the starter and checked the wiring (starters good)
- Checked the solenoid (solenoid engages)
- put everything back together.

No matter what I do the bindle wont engage the flywheel. I haven't been able to move the flywheel manually and when I pulled the starter i could see some fresh wear on the teeth and metal shavings (not major chunks or missing teeth though). Is this a flywheel issue? Can I rotate the flywheel/engine to expose fresh teeth? Would there be another Issue that would keep the flywheel from moving or the starter from engaging?

Any pertinent advice would be appreciated. I don't have the land I used to, but I'd like to get this back into operation.

Backstory: First time tractor owner, it came with the land (no manuals, no instructions). Came with a leaking head gasket, got that repaired, moved, and it has sat for a while.

When you try to start it does the starter rotate the engine at all, or does the starter just rev up without turning the flywheel. From what you wrote, I can't tell whether the engine is even able to rotate. What happens when you tuturn the engine turn the engine with the crankshaft nut? Does it turn easy?

The starter does not rotate the engine at all. The starter spins and the solenoid pushes the bindle out but either the bindle is not engaging the flywheel, or the flywheel is not turning. Unsure about the crankshaft nut (what or where), I'll take a look tonight. Is this something i'll need to break the tractor to access?

First things first. It sounds like the starter is operating as it should. How do you know that the engine is free to turn? How do you know that the engine isn't seized up. Somehow you have to prove to yourself that the engine can turn. Easiest way I know of to do that is to put a big socket wrench on the front nose of the crankshaft - where the pulley is bolted - and see if the engine will rotate. Go very slowly; you wouldn't want to start it by accident - and that can happen with a diesel.
BTW, you might want to move this thread to the Vintage Yanmar site here on TBN. There are lots of people there with expertise on these old Yanmars.

I turned the crankshaft and it seemed to turn freely. But when I tried the starter it still would not turn over. Could the teeth of the bindle be worn down to the point it is not engaging the flywheel? The flywheel shows some recent wear (see pic) where the bindle has chewed it up but I thought maybe if i rotated the flywheel i'd get good teeth for the starter to engage. could I have a buildup of pressure that is keeping the flywheel from moving?
Man this is frustrating.https://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/images/smilies/mad.gif

Does the engine turn over by hand without the starter? How do you know it turns over?
