hi ed,

1. I would ensure the radiator water level is correct before every use. Double check it during long hours of operation.

2. Try using a system cleaner, the process has shown improvements for me. I use Marvel Mystery Oil, a thread with some discussion about it is http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/yanmar/126645-ym1610d-spittin-oil.html . I add it to both crankcase and fuel, follow label fuel mixing after 1st or 2nd tank. Initial clean out, I choose to mix 2 ounces per gallon. I only add 1/2 quart to crankcase, not a full quart as label suggests.

3. Before above treatment, when engine was hot and ran at idle speed allot I would experience loss of power. Back then, I shut down the tractor, waited 5 minutes and everything ran fine. White smoke did plague me, now I look really hard for it, and do not see it while running, just a few seconds at a cold startup.

Blue smoke ?? Rings

hi kenmac, that was my first thoughts also. I was even getting ready for a winter tear down inspection. What the heck, people have sworn by Marvel Mystery Oil for years, what do I have to loose. It does clean out Varnish deposits in the fuel system, carbon build up in the cylinders, sludge in the crankcase and such. On a side note, leaky valve stem seals will cause oil burning, varnished injectors will not properly mist fuel (incomplete burn). There are so many variables involved, I just recommend the trouble shooting begin simple, then progress to the more labor intense procedures as required.

I agree, I like to start with the simple things 1 st.. B-4 performing any work on it I would 1 st take a compression check. That still maynot rule out a broken oil ring, valve guides, etc,The injectors I'am not sure about blue smoke . black mabe

Probably oil out of the exhaust. Valve guides / seals would also do this. So, If the valve guides are good valve stem seals are good. rings would be next. In order. easiest Valve stem seals, harder valve guides, hardest rings . If you have to go with rings I would do a total rebuild on the bottom end
