YM 1700
need info.
Have a YM 1700 which I need a mower for. Do not need a finish mower.
Have 2.5 acres which only about 3/4 acre needs to be cut with the tractor.

What is a good mower to buy at a reasonable price considering it will sit there and look pretty most of the time.

I know a 4 ft. will do but have never owned one so don't have much knowledge.

I live in Louisiana if you know of anyone in this state which sells them.

Thanks

Hey,

I live close to Livingston, LA........Where you live?......I have a Yanmar YM2000...........My next finish mower will be a 5' Sitrex (not sure if you need/want a 4 or 5 foot with the 1700, but probably a 5 foot will work)............I have heard LOTS of good things about these mowers...........1danny (www.peq.com), ProdaddyTX (www.rcotractor.com), and LMTC (Little Miami Trading Company - Compact Tractors) all sell these mowers.........I'm not sure about LMTC, but I know that 1danny and ProdaddyTX can have one delivered to your door.........All 3 of them are out of state though.....I don't know your circumstances/situation, but that shouldn't matter if they are out of state or not..........Besides, you wouldn't have to pay taxes anyway......And I don't think the shipping would cost that much.

Like I said, My next one will be the Sitrex brand.......The 5' is roughly between $1200 to $1400 dollars...............I currently have a very old 6' LMC brand finish mower, which is about to "bite the dust", so to speak. It is a real good mower but the man who sells them locally is just too high on his prices.

Hope this helps ya',

It sounds to me like what you're looking for is a rotary cutter. I got a nice one for the price from Wayne but I was able to drive to his place to get it. You might want to look at King Kutter because they are reasonably priced ($650 for a 4'). Being that you will only be cutting 3/4 of an acre and not frequently, I understand not wanting to spend $1200 for Woods or Bush Hog. I didn't either. I would go with a 4' after all the posts we've had on here recently about what size RC to use on a 1700.

If you are going to get a rotary cutter, then yes just get a 4 foot one, as that goes good with the YM1700, without getting it to over heat. I live in MS and used a 4 foot one with mine, with no problem. If you keep the blades sharp on it, it will do almost as good as a finish mower. Providing you run it at number one pto and at the red line on the tach. I still use my 4 foot one, and its hard to tell where I stop with my lawn tractor and start with the bush-hog.

I TOTALLY MIS-UNDERSTOOD THE POST..........SORRY

If your looking for a "rough" cut or "bush hog" type rotary cutter, for the money, you CAN NOT GO WRONG with the KODIAK brand...........Several others and I (who all own tractors) think that this cutter is the absolute BEST FOR WHAT YOU PAY FOR IT.............

Matter of fact, I live about 5 or 6 miles from a dealer (Gordon Murrill?) who sells the Farm Pro tractors....Personally, I wouldn't buy the tractors, BUT I have bought a couple implements from him...........My 6' Howse disks, and my United middle buster.

Gordon is one of the most straight forwardest people you would want to meet.....He is VERY knowledgeable about what he sells........His prices are incredibly low.......I really don't know how he does it, myself. I guess its because of all the business he gets, I don't really know.

Anyway, I talked to him the other day.......I just stopped by to look at his finish mowers........We got into a conversation and started talking about implements. We both agreed that King Kutter is a real good product.....But, he quit selling them because they went up so high on their prices..Thats when he started carrying the Kodiak line of rotary cutters, along with other implement manufacturers. (United, Howse, maybe a couple more...not for sure)

I like the Bush Hog implements myself.....But they are pricey.......But I would also buy a KODIAK brand cutter too.......They are built well in my book.......I looked them over real good too.....Matter of fact, I got a brochure from Gordon on them. He told me what the prices were on the cutters, but I honestly forgot........The 6' Farm Pro finish mower he sells (which I think is very good for the money too.....I have 2 nieghbors that each own one, and both love em') is $850.00

His website is Welcome to Action Equipment Give him a call.....Even if you don't buy, you won't regret talking to him........You can see his business right off of Interstate I-12 between Walker and Livingston, LA........It is on Black Mud Rd., which runs right beside the Westbound side of the interstate.

Hey Travis R,

I live in Covington. My property is in Bossier Parish by Cypress Lake.
We just built a new house there. Planned on making the move then BAM Katrina kinda set things back a bit.

I think I know where that place is you are talking about.
You can see it while driving I-12 on the North side headed to Baton Rouge.
I'll check him out.

A 4' is all I need. Like others have said, I'm not mowing much with it so I really don't need to spend a lot.

I could just mow it with the riding mower but heck that's no fun!

I looked at the Fram Pro tractors too. Something just didn't seem right so I passed. Glad I found the Yamar.

Thanks for the info.

I think the 4' is perfect for the little Yanmars.... Not just for the O/H issue but for size too.. The mower will follow in the tracs of the tractor, if you mow between trees or trails in the woods, this is a very nice feature.. I too bought my YM2000 for my 2ac lot, 1/2 of wich(maybe) needs to be cut with the tractor.. Then, the bug bit me.... I now mow the 5ac behind my property too(I would like to buy it as well, but thats a different story) so I have a "cleaner look behind the house and he lets me hunt it in return:D .. I also, have gotten into cutting and planting food plots(again for free hunting land) and maintaining a freinds property, for the same reasons... Anyhow, my point is, be prepared to do alot more work with it than you initially anticipated..

I have a 4' Howse and cant complain a bit.. I got mine as part of a package and I'm not really sure of the individual cost, but is a cheaper mower from what I have been told..
