YM-186D PTO Removal

Hey guys, my ym186D's PTO seems to be dickered. Got this tractor a few months ago and its lived outside most of its life and it's a little beat but runs great.

Anyway the PTO does not work. Lever wont engage. Shaft appears to be pushed in, its loose and sort of flops around a bit. Oh and it leaks out to case. The problems appear to be effecting the PTO portion of the trans and nothing else. Drives great.

Has anyone removed the PTO assembly on a 186? Does it come out like a full assembly? Any tips? Looks like i'm going to have to pull the lower 3 point lift bars off and shaft out.

Looks like someone had a too-long pto driveshaft then raised the implement.

This photo might give you an idea what to remove. Its the PTO assembly from YM240. I had to remove it when replacing the right axle housing.

Yours won't be identical but this will give you some idea. Mainly, find the bolts that will remove the PTO assembly intact instead of the studs/nuts that would drop all its parts into the transmission when you loosen them.

Here's the thread where I described tearing down the YM240 rear axle. I expect yours is a similar design. After the attachment bolts were removed it only took a little jiggling of the PTO shift lever to disengage the assembly, there was nothing else in the way of sliding it out.

Thanks! I'm hoping its a slipped snap ring or something. I ordered all the seals and snap rings from Hoye for it so we'll see. Theres a lot of extra stuff to remove before I can get to the plate which looks like it might be a pain.

thanks guys. Finally had time to pull it out today. Snap ring on the end Bearing was off and the whole shaft/gears/bearings were pushed in about an inch. no damage that I could see. Wont get it back together for a day or so when i have time.

Just come cleaning and placing things back correctly makes this a winner!

Like the pixs seeing the shiny gears.

How does it look on the inside opening with the axle and gears there? clean?

I see something interesting in your first photo. The orange plates on either side of the opening may be the mounts for a semi-permanent tiller, as provided on the Japan-market version of these. Was the 3-point mounting hardware attached to those? Those might be a replacement after the US version 3-point mount got damaged? I recall you mentioned bent parts to remove before getting the pto out.

Here's a photo showing what I think is the standard US 3-point mount for YM186D, its what is on both my first and second YM186D.

Yours looks stronger if it uses those orange plates.
