Ok folks I encountered some problems today while mowing. First with the transmission in neutral the tractor still continued forward, even thought I have an overrunning clutch installed and the mower was stopped, this seemed to clear up on its own. However, later for some odd reason reverse and second gear did not want to engage.

At present I've got the tractor turned off and when I move the shifter to the right side of the gate, the side with 2nd and reverse, it feels incredibly loose and fails to engage when compared to the left side - any ideas on what broke and better yet how to fix it.

Thanks!

Update:

Looks like I found the culprit:

Clearly the screw is done for.

Any idea where I might be able to buy such a screw locally (part number #18 on the photo)? (I know I can call Hoye on Monday but I want my tractor up and running NOW:) )

Can't you find that same size screw at you local hardware and machine it to fit until you can get the right screw?????

I would but I don't have any tools to work with that would enable me to machine a screw.

Thanks for the size, but it's the little "nipple" (for lack of a better technical term) on the end of the screw that kills nary all hope of running out to Lowe's and finding a replacement.

If you're really serious about running that tractor right now, then a bench grinder is all you need to hack down a standard screw. It will be ugly but it should last until the correct part arrives. (ever looked inside a VN Factory Rebuilt? :D )

Just don't speed-shift it!

From my experience, the screw is not available from Yanmar, but is easy to make on a lathe. Use the screw Danny suggested, and have the end machined down. The spring also fails occasionally, they are available still.

Get a screw that is longer than necessary (say 24 mm ) and and then "turn" down the part that is necessary with a grinder and finish with a file, when it is to size cut off the excess. If you cannot find a longer screw then put a couple of nuts on the bolt as far as possible and chuck that end in the drill and "turn" down the end.

By turning the screw while grinding and filing you will end up with a centered and round (like a lathe) nipple. It works, I KNOW!! :D :D

Thanks again for all the suggestions, and as was mentioned correctly that screw is no longer available from Yanmar. I ended up using the method MJ mentioned to grind a replacement, not pretty but hey it works.

Bardzo dobrze!! Very Good!! I am glad that it worked and that you are able to get back to work. If you take your time you can actually end up with a piece that looks like it came from a lathe. The final finish can be made with some emory cloth to polish it up. But you have to plan for it and measure frequently.
