Hi everyone,
I have admired the know-how of many members here at TBN.com. :) Maybe some of you can answer my question(s):
I have a 20 HP, Yanmar 3-cylinder diesel engine model 3008 D001 that I took off of a worn out J.D. golf-course ZTR tractor-mower. It runs great! I have utilized the YM to home-build a 10kW generator using a belt-drive system. Again, it works super, but the only RPM governance is an internal, not the adjustable external kind.
My question is, is there a place on this little powerhouse to mount a proprietary governor; i.e. a cover that accesses a gear somewhere? I took a square cover off the side of the block, just below the injector pump and just above the mecahical fuel pump, but all I see behind this cover is a small horizontal sliding bar, held in line by a c-clip.​
(BTW, dumb me, I knocked the c-clip off by touching it, and it fell into the oil in the narrow portion of the block below, and no amount of magnetic fishing will bring it back. Obviously, I can replace the clip, but I'd like to know whether the clip is gonna end up as a monkeywrench in the works, whatever the works are. I dunno yet what the cover was covering!:confused:)

I am planning, if I cannot mount a governor, on trying a cruise-control adaptation, if I can pull enough vacuum off the intake to power it.​
I welcome any and all thoughts on this issue. As I said, the thing generates great, but w/o self-governing RPM's I am having to use the throttle to set the RPM high to compensate for expected loads. This is not good for appliances, so I need help...any information from the more experienced out there? THANKS!!!

If I can pull enough vacuum off the intake to power it.

The only time you will get significant vacuum in the intake manifold is if the air cleaner is plugged. Diesels do not have throttle plates (there are a few rare exceptions) so do not create a significant suction on the intake side. Diesel cars generally run a vacuum pump off the back of the alternator or separately to get the vacuum for controls and cruise.

You might find a "woodward" brand speed governor. They have rotary ones that can take a mag pickup or alternator RPM signal. I don't know a particular model number. You'll have to google it. Good luck.

Thank you for info about diesels and vacuums, especially for explaining WHY! I've seen a number of posts on the internet in the last two years from guys saying they were building a diesel generator, and were considering using a cruise control setup for a governor. As I recall, no one chimed in with a warning like this. THANKS!

I'll check on the Woodward governor. I'm also considering attaching a Pierce-type pulley governor. I could come off either the pulleys that drive the gen head or the fan belt. Electronic governors are $pendy, and they seem to work by changing the spark of a gas engine, so that's out.

As I said, I open to ideas. Also, the question about my oops in dropping the c-clip into the block. What is there in the block below the injection pump and above the mechanical fuel pump? I'll post a pic soon.
