I recently purchased a Yanmar F17D. I don't really know
much about it. Would like to hear from anyone that has
experience with this model.

I have an F16D which I love, I bought it mostly to cut one acre with a bush mower. I also have an Allied loader and a gray rototiller which work well with this model. The only thing that I have had a problem with is running the mower without an over run clutch, do not do this, it stripped my rear drive gears. I am still learning about tractors but this was a good lesson. I am sure you will love it.

Mark, are you saying that the lack of an overrun clutch and not a slip clutch/shear bolt caused you to strip your rear drive gears? That sounds highly unusual. Have not heard of that happening before.

My F16 I bought with a 48" Howes brush mower. The first time I used it the tractor would not stop when I pushed in the clutch. I was in four wheel drive and was having a hard time driving the tractor. after about 45 min. something did not seem right so I put it in 2 wheel and the tractor just made grinding noises from the rear end. The company I purchased it from came and checked it out, picked it up and replaced the bad gears under warrenty. They also installed an overrun clutch on the PTO shaft which solved the stopping problem when mowing and has worked very well since. It is possible I did something wrong the first time I used the tractor, but I still do not know what it was. Being very new to tractors everything is a learning experience and this forum has helped me the most.

See my post under "stripped rear gears". I tried to explain how this can happen. I'm not sure whether I got the idea across or not.

Greg, your post explained it very well. I had not thought about what would happen if the brakes were actually able to stop the tractor without an overrun clutch, but something has to give, for sure....gotta be the rear end. Come to think of it, shouldn't the shear bolt have sheared? Same stress, just coming from different direction.
