There seems to be 2 categories of Yanmar Grey Market tractors out there. The older ones are the YM series and the newer ones (up to 1992?) are the F or FX series. Is there any difference in the quality of the construction of these two series or are they both basically the same mechanically with just a more modern look to the newer series.

I have owned both and you can't beat the quality of either. Nothing's changed. The F's have more modern features such as glow plugs, syncronized transmissions and an engine that shuts off with the key.

I don't know of anyone who works on them who thinks there is an inherent quality difference. I do know I hear some grumbling that the "F/FX" series can be more challenging in the shop, as access to some things is not as easy as with the "YM" models. And while availability will likely get better with time, for now there is better parts avaialbility for the "YM" models than for the "F/FX" models.
