Tractor
Yanmar 1110D
I wanted to haul some firewood out of my pasture and felt like some weight on the front would be helpful. My dad had a stack of weights and it turned out that they had slots that matched up to holes on the frame. The weights weigh 10 lbs each, so I've added 50 lbs to the front frame. Will this cause any problems down the road? It seems like the tractor is built strong enough to handle it, but I'd hate to have to find parts for a broken front end down the road.

The little tractor had no problem hauling a load of wood up the hill and the front felt more planted with the added weight.

I had JD hang-on weights for my 1510D handled it with no problem.

The only Yanmar literature I have ever read concerning front ballast is in the 195/240 operation manual. That manual says you can add up to 225lbs. Your tractor is a good bit smaller than those but no doubt in my mind 50 lbs is sure not going to be to much.

I would really doubt you'd create a front end issue with 50lbs.

On my first YM186D, a model nearly as small as yours, to keep the nose down when climbing I ran four 70 lb weights plus two tens like you have. The two tens replaced a chunk of heavy railroad rail, my second anvil, which must have weighted 40 lbs. This much weight was needed to make the front axle help pull my heavy watering trailer uphill. Also it was needed to steer when the 4 ft rotary mower was on the back. Several years use didn't hurt anything.

The second YM186D, the one I have now, has a Yanmar loader which must weigh as much as that first tractor's ballast.

However these US Yanmars have a front 4x4 axle different from the similar Japan versions. So this much front ballast might be excessive for you. For your tractor I would leave on what you have plus make a removable add-on to mount in front of that, to use when needed.

Thanks, guys. Sounds like I'll be fine. I'll keep running what I have...and look for a larger Yanmar with a loader. ;)

I have a ym2000 so it's a bigger frame. I have about 150 to 180 pounds hanging off the front. Doesn't notice it. Front is still light with my disk harrow and 5ft bush hog lifted.
