A friend of mine has a 1300 that is blowing black smoke like a train under any load at all. Oil and Water all check out fine, is this an injector pump problem??? all fluid and filters are also clean.... Thanks for any help you can provide......

Black smoke is normally an indication of too much fuel, or not enough air. Most likely, its not getting enough air. Is the air filter clean? Check for any restriction in the intake from air cleaner to head. Less likely is that the injector pump is injecting too much fuel. If you can till without making a cloud of dust, you could try it with the air cleaner removed just long enough to see if that changes anything.

It also could be a bad injector. It might be worth taking the injectors to a shop to have them tested. I suppose that if none of these are the cause, the injector pump could be the problem.

Finally, though I think its not likely, it could also be valves not sealing.

I second that advice.. If I see black smoke on a diesel at load.. first thing I check is for an air obstruction. I usually carry a sock.. ( like the ones you wear) and pull the air breather and slip the sock over and clamp it down. It will keep the big chunks out and let you load test it.

I'd then check the fuel filter, and smell the oil / feel it. if it's way diesel diluted, change it. .... next would be injectors, then pump.

post back with what you find.

Make sure the exhaust (muffler) is not getting plugged.

Could also be water in fuel or air in fuel line.. Have you had any fuel leaking around the bowl, fuel lines, or injectors?

I have a Yanmar 155 that is blowing smoke like a freight train as well. I changed the fuel and filter and the air cleaner as well. Air Cleaner was nasty, got a new one from Hoye Tractor. Runs Great Now and no more smoke, unless I accelerate under a load, then the smoke is momentary, until RPM has re-stabilized~!! Saw the post and thought I'd agree with the first two guys ideas... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

klawson44,

Excellent advice from the other members. If nothing works, a simple test will tell you for sure if it's dirty fuel, clogged line or bad injector:

Take a 17MM end wrench, and while the tractor is idling, loosen one injector line nut. If the tractor stalls - then that injector and the line is operating correctly, and the second injector is probably fouled or the line is blocked with debris.

Tighten the nut and go to the second injector line and do the same. If the tractor remains running
at approx the same rpm, then that is where the problem is. Either a blocked fuel line or dirty/bad injector.

great advice, Mark. Thanks!

Black smoke blowing under load is normal. My tractors behave this way and I consider it a normal sign that there is load on the engine. Now, if it kept up after rpms re-established i'd be concerned... -arthr
