Oil & Fuel ym135 oil seal/brakes

I have a 79'or 80'(org. wheel stamped'79) ym135(lime green U.S.market) with oil leak behind the brake drum. Can I just pull the drum, dig out seal/replace? OR am I going to have to bust into final drive case to change the seal? Also I have a 82' or 83'(org. wheel stamped 82')226D (red U.S.market) same question? Does anyone know??? BAD picture in service manual,no clear procedure for this task either? Any help would be appreciated. thanks, Dan.

Dan,

I don't have the manuals in front of me...but in nearly all instances I have had to pull the cover, remove snap rings and then slide the rear axles out to access the seals.

I believe there isn't a Yanmar made that has access to the seals without removing the axle assembly first. (I could be mistaken though )

Thanks Mark, I will be breaking the 226d into(getting guages for test before I do) and sending Pwr Shft trans to Trans shop(BUDDY) (NO Body else would fool with it) I take it snap rings will be acessable through open end of rear end case? Once the rear axles are out, Is seal installed from the inside?(pretty tite in there)or from outside(behind the drum) As for the 135 Puling cover, I dread Balls and springs/3pt/ linkage/God forbid droping something down in there HA HA.Thanks Dan

basically the same tractor nothing to fall out. Remove bolts and pull axle and cover off in one piece.

Tractordriver, I thought Mark meant the top cover,Dummy me. I think I got it now? It's the SIDE cover that bolts to the trans housing. Remove bolts and pull axle/final drive and cover off in one piece? Then I sould be able to put the whole thing(axle/final drive and cover in one piece ) in a vice and change the seals? At that time I take it, I will encounter the snap ring? Your picture (very good,thanks) does't show the snap ring? Or snap ring removal required prior to pulling axle/final drive and cover off? I can't take credit for the photos i recently replaced a axle seal and bearing and Another member Posted those pics for me. Thankyou to that person.
I did not finish the job yet so i took a look and it looks like that seal can be changed just by pulling the brake drum and not he whole cover.

If your leak is behind the brake drum, you don't have to pull a rear axle. Just remove the brake cover and the drum and then you can pop out the seal and replace it with a new one, without even draining the hydraulic oil.
You would only have to pull a rear axle to change an axle seal.
