I wanted to know if the oil pressure and temp lights were supposed to come on briefly when I first turn on the ignition key? I've never seen the lights come on my 1401. Thanks.
Check all fuses in the fuse panel and connections to the temp and oil pressure sending units. Oil sending unit is under alternator. Temp unit is on top of block near top hose. Wiggle connections to make sure they are tight. Also, you can check the bulbs in the dash by removing front dash panel and reaching up inside to remove them.

I own a 1401 which is very similiar to the 169 American version. The owners manual states that the temp light will not come on when starting or the switch is on. The oil light will come on if the switch is turned on or when starting the tractor. The oil light should go off within seconds after the tractor starts. The temp light will only come on if the engine over heats. The manual suggests switching the oil and temp bulbs since they are the same and if the switched buld works with the oil sensor you can be assured that the bulb is ok. I do this on a yearly basis. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
Professor- that is good to know. I wondered why my 1401D's temp light never came on. I never worried about it much. When I'm working it hard, I pay a little extra attention to sights, smells and sounds that the tractor makes. When I start it cold, I crank it with the compression release pulled until the oil light goes out.
