Tuesday I was doing some FEL and blade work with my YM1500. After about 30 minutes I found that depressing the clutch while in reverse didn't stop the tractor motion. There was an irrigation canal behind me so I decided the best course of action was to shut it down. Then put it in neutral, fired it up and couldn't change gears, as if the clutch wasn't releasing. Shut it down again, put it in forward gear and move right along but when I depressed the clutch, I continued forward but much slower.
I put the tractor back in its resting spot and began to ponder the problem. Did a search on the forum for similar problems. Decided to try what Wayne of LMTC suggested; run the tractor for thirty minutes, block the clutch down and leave overnight. Now the engine won't start. Turns over on compression release but when you kick that off, it stops turning. Maybe the battery is down. Put it on a trickle charger overnight. Dosen't register as fully charged. The battery is only one year old. Put it on a conventional charge for a couple hours. Take a voltage reading on it, at 12.86 volts. My truck battery reads 12.08 so the tractor battery is probably good. Clean the terminals and the ground. Reinstall the battery. Put the transmission in neutral, engage the decompression lever, depress the clutch and hit the starter. Turing over great. Release the decompression lever and THUNK!. Nothing.
So I think about it for the remainder of Wednesday and all of Thursday. Today I resolve to jack up one wheel, adjust the clutch linkage, and try to determine what is wrong. But first, I try once more to start it. Same procedure, same THUNK. Well, tried starting it with the tranny in neutral, decompression on, but not depressing the clutch. Fires right up. Yes sir. Maybe all it needed was a full days rest. Push the clutch in and hear strange noises and the engine starts to labor.
Now I haven't been inside a bell housing or worked on a clutch since 1966. Not going to start again now. Going to haul this thing into a shop and say fix it.
Any of you care to express an opinion on what the mechanic is going to find and what parts I should order?
TIA
Bob
