I am in the process of renewing the bearings and seals in the front axle (4WD) of my 1500D (Green) and need to see if anyone is able to provide some of the specifications.

The wheel bearings on the stub axles are 30206 tapered roller bearings. How do I set the preload on these bearings in this application?

What type of oil should be used in the front axle of this tractor and what is the proper fill level?

Thanks.

Thinking maybe someone with a manual would give info. This is just my opinion based on quite a bit of bearing experience through the years. I would put it back with the same spacers as came out, tighten the locknut similiar to a trailer axle bearing. I would take all the slack out but don't over tighten. I really don't think you need pre load on this slow moving bearing. I think what may be more important is the gear backlash. You will need to change shim thickness on ref #s 52 & 53 to obtain proper backlash. .004" to .006" is called for on a 220. I don't think you could go wrong if your in that range. For what it's worth, if you checked backlash on a lot of these 30 year old tractors I would guess they would be way over limits. Yanmar Tractor Parts: 4WD_INTERNAL_G

Run something like 90W gear oil. The advice I have seen is to fill the axle tube until the axle shaft is covered. Give the fluid some time to percolate out to the hub reduction gears, so check it in a few days.

I don't have anything better than what Winston said for the bearings, sorry.

I was leaning toward something like 80W-90 gear oil for the front axle, especially since I already have some on hand. Can someone post what the manual states for oil type for some of the older Yanmar 'D' model front axles?

I appreciate the input so far. I plan to tighten the stub axles similar to a trailer hub, as Winston stated, taking any side-to-side play out.

90wt is what's called for in the front axle. I had to go to NAPA to get some. I actually filled the outer housings on the work bench before I installed them.
