Yanmar YM1600
It's been awhile since I posted on here. The reason being my simple starter problem turned into a blown motor. I have reached a standstill. I don't know where to go from here. I don't want to give up but I know how expensive this motor rebuild can be and I don't know if I can find another viable motor. Maybe, you fine gents can help me again like you have before. So here's some pics. There's some real gems to enjoy.

The head has starting fluid damage
How can you tell that the head has starting fluid damage? I didn't know you can tell by just looking at it. What exactly should someone look for when looking for starting fluid damage? As an aside, info like this is just another reason why I like TBN in general and bmaverick in particular.

From the pictures it looks like the oil was never changed, so the block oil passages may be all gummed up and clogged. It also looks like you need new connecting rods because the bearings have worn all the way through and damaged the connecting rods. The crankshaft also probably needs work. But if it is not too worn or damaged then it could be re-ground and new bearings sized for the new smaller crank journals could be bought. I don't think it is hopeless if the block isn't cracked. Of course the cam needs to be checked and new lifters should probably be used. I have never rebuilt a diesel engine but have done my share of gasoline engines. And some looked worse than the pictures you posted but I was still able to rebuild them successfully and get a long life afterwards.

The head has starting fluid damage, yet not too bad should there be no cracks. Hard to see really.
If the head is viable, then clean it up, lap it, new valves, springs and hardware to have it rebuilt. This is a 2-clylindar so the cost is less.

Or for about $700, get a refurbished one.

Used Cylinder Head fits Yanmar YM195 YM240 YM1600 YM1700 YM1900 YM2000 YM2210 2T84 2T90 2TR16 2TR17 2TR19 2TR20A 724450-11700 724450-11702

As for the lower end damages, the crank would have to be inspected.
the crank is toast. i dont need a mic to tell me the one main bearing journal is bad.

I havent bought a big enough socket to remove the crank yet. I'll try to get under it today and take a pic. I'd like to know what other motors would bolt up to that bell housing. 700 for a refurbished head or motor?

Rebuilding that motor would cost what I have in the whole tractor. I'm pretty sure the crank is toast because I can feel the oval shape in the journal with my fingers. I can also pull on the pulley and get alot of play. I'm wondering if I could find a motor that bolts up that bell housing.

Just guess, something to explore further:

I think YM1600 was an earlier version of YM1700/YM2000. And their US twins YM195/YM240.

YM2000 in particular, is common in the US. A lot were imported used. So anything in these series MIGHT be a bolt-up replacement engine. Or the source for a crankshaft, if the stroke is the same. But verify all this before spending any money !!!

Nice photo, Rocks91.
That is a great picture of an old engine. Might be about the best textbook example of a worn out engine that I've ever seen. A classic.
And you say it actually still ran? That's amazing... Even more amazing is that it still looks like it might be rebuildable - although it might not be worth the effort.
I call "piffle" on the starting fluid diagnosis - though a motor that worn probably was a tad difficult to start...
