YM1601D Front Wheel Drive Question

On the 1601D model, what is the postion for the shift lever when the tractor is in 2-wheel drive? Is the lever back (toward the rear of the tractor) for two wheel drive and forward for four wheel drive?

I took look at a Yanmar operation manual for the YM1401/YM165D and the book states; pull the lever back to engage the front wheel drive and push the lever foward to disengage.

So which way does the YM1601D lever goes for two wheel drive???

On my 1610d back is 2wd,foward is 4wd.Not sure about yours but could'nt you do a test ?I mean put the leaver back and then back it up a slight incline to where one of the rear wheels starts to spin and then put the lever foward and see if you get "unstuck".I just checked the manual for a 1510d and it also says back 2wd foward 4wd.hope this helps.

Forward for both models 1601D and 1610D.

I don't recall any Yanmar model that doesn't operate in four wheel drive with the selector any other way than forward.

That's what I thought. But,,,,,in the manual for the YM1301/1401 it states,, Front wheel drive (YM165D). Pull the lever back to engage front wheel drive and push forward to disengage. Even the pictures show this. So after I reading this I had to asked the question. Which way????

I know that this manual is not close to my tractor, but some of the information in it cross over. And it has pictures!!

This weekend I will do the backing up a steep hill deal... I got a good one one the farm. It works the Ford 3910 hard while backing up the hill, so it should tell on the front wheel drive.

I hope someone out there has a 1601D and they can set me stright.

I have a YM1601D and a YM1610D (and a 1300D and 1401D).

The YM1601, YM1610, YM1401, and most other models are, as Mark said, 4wd=forward. Some models though like the YM1500 & YM165 are 4wd=back which seem a little counter-intuitive to me.
