Recently purchased a YM1700. No almost nothing about tractors or diesel engines. The PO told me to shut it down just push the throttle lever all the way forward. When he did that it shut right off. Sometimes when I do that it shuts off sometimes it does not. Once I had the clutch in and as soon as I let off the clutch it shut down. Is there a secret handshake to shut this thing down?

As Peter said, it sounds as though your linkage is out of adjustment.

The linkage is the only control over shutoff. Adjust as needed.

I have a JD with a similar Yanmar engine,, what I found, is that it is not the hand throttle that does not allow the engine to shut off,,
The problem is the foot throttle,, it gets dirty, etc, then "sticks", and the foot throttle over-rides the hand throttle,, keeping the engine running,,,

I forgot to mention, you can lift the foot throttle with your toe,, and the engine will stop,,,

I have a Ym 1700. There is no throttle cable or foot pedal. This is a grey model Yanmar. Just the mechanical linkage. You probably just need to adjust the linkage. I guess that you should adjust the length slightly longer (out). Of course it could be the other way around. Just experiment and see which way works.

When I replaced the Nylon washer Tension Adj. mine would stick and not go all the way forward. When I moved the Throttle lever/Handle forwards L. Hand, I used my R. index finger to pull the Spring tensioner back all the way and prevent it from sticking and not closing all the way. You can see the round hole were the Spring attaches in the Pic. and that's were you pull it backwards or towards you to make it seat. I replaced that 10 Yrs. ago and still do it to the day and make sure it closes all the way. QUICK!! That way it goes dead instantly
