I picked up a real good running YM1700BD today. The bad is the the 4wd is not working. Checked the front end today and it seems good with smooth gears and when rotating one tire the other turns in the opposite direction as it should. The 4wd lever seems to engage as it should. You have to clutch it a little which is normal. I am going to check the drive shaft in the morning. It's almost like there's no drive shaft. I thought it might be the balls missing. Any ideas or opinions. I couldn't come up with a break down for the drop box.

Drive balls and components would be my first suspicion. Sending you a pm.

Thanks Winston. Hope your correct. Bought it knowing it had a problem and hoping it would be an easy fix.

I hope it's drive shaft related. I'll know more tomorrow when I go into the drive shaft.

The verdict is in. Good news! The cotter pin had come out that holds the spring pressure on the front of the shaft. There is some wear on the shaft and I'm considering putting some weld on it before I put it back. Any ideas? 0102160925.jpg0102160925a.jpg
Also does anybody know if the head light grille from a YM1700 will fit a YM1700BD?0102160926.jpg
This one time I gambled and it paid off.

YANMAR_YM1700_USED_COMPACT_TRACTOR.jpgBased on these images it would appear they might interchange although a different look.

I agree on the different look but that wouldn't matter. Any thoughts on the drive shaft? Thanks for your help Winston.

Is the drive shaft hollow or solid? Was that groove cut with the round spring keeper and is that where you are talking about welding?

I wouldn't think welding could hurt anything. Might weld a little on one side, then the other so as not to put a bend in it. This is just an opinion, not the rule.

You did good, a gamble that paid off well!

I'm pretty sure the headlight wraparound from YM1700 (or YM195) will fit YM1700BD. From memory, I think YM2000 was larger and won't fit.

But don't rely on this, buy only something that is returnable! It may take a couple of tries to get it right.
