Looking at a ym2000 and 186d to buy. How big of finish mower can these tractors handle? I'll just be mowing the lawn. Would like 6ft mower but thinking might be to big and heavy for tractor.

Any help would be appreciated and opinion on these two models would be great also.

thanks

The 186d will handle a 60" (5ft) I'd say as long as the weight isn't too high, it's lift capacity is around 550lbs. Most 6 fts weigh over 600lb and I think is too big for the 186d. I'm not as familiar with the 2000, it might be a larger tractor. My 186d came with a 4ft yanmar RFM but if I was to buy another one for some reason it would be a 5ft.

I use a 5 ft. HF finish mower on my 186D. It handles it just fine. I think it is around 500 lbs. I think that 6 ft would be to much for it as well. Good luck.

I own both. Get the YM186D. It is much better at intricate mowing around trees, where you have to back up into a corner, etc. where the YM2000 would be slow and clumsy.

Also the larger tractor's non-synchro transmission is a nuisance. In tight work with a lot of backing up there are too many times you have to wait for the gears to spin down if you don't shift instantly.

A search should find a thread I wrote comparing these two for mowing with a rotary mower, a while back, maybe April 2010.

Capacity is about the same - YM2000 has a little larger lift capacity, on a far larger chassis. Working in waist high wet grass and mowing with a 4 ft rotary mower the YM2000 is working hard and the YM186d is occasionally over its head if it has to climb a grade at the same time - that's the best comparison I can offer.

The advantage of YM2000 is it is cheaper, simpler and easier to maintain, and heavier so it is safe (safer) with a larger loader. For lawn mowing it doesn't sound like you need those features. And it's a lot taller which limits which trees it will go under.

They are both very similar. The 186D will be better for shifting on the lawn though otherwise when you let off the clutch on the YM2000 it will tear up the ground a little bit. The 186D is shorter too, this is assuming that it doesn't have factory ROPS (my 169D has those) but it will otherwise be better for lawn mowing. The YM2000 will be better if you like a simple machine but I assure you that they are both a lot easier to work on compared to some of the newer tractors out there. Also, you stated a 186D, that means 4wd (D) vs. 2wd (no D) and that too will add value and an extra pull if your tractor would find a soft spot in the lawn.

My vote is on the YM186D  :2cents:

Unless your really revved up or just "dumping" the clutch, there is not really a problem tearing up the yard, but i agree with everything else.

I'd recommend the 186D also. The powershift is a huge advantage when you are finish mowing. I have a 187d and I use a 6' finish mower with it. It's a bit light on horsepower if the grass is long, or wet, or you're going up a hill, but I use it with no problems. My 6' finish mower is lighter than my 4' woods bush hog, never had any trouble with the 3 pt lifting either one of them, although the front end will get a bit light with the bush hog in the air.

I own both. My experience mirrors California's, but I would say the YM2000's additional power and friendlier torque curve makes a significant difference in the speed you can mow. The 186D is significantly less powerful in PTO horsepower than the YM2000. The Powershift transmission and built-in overrunning clutch is vastly more productive in putting the mower where you want it with the 186D versus the YM2000. Buy an overrunning clutch for the YM2000 if you go that route. It's worth every penny just in usability. It's also much safer.

I know you asked for a comparison between two specific models, but if you're wanting to mow the lawn, buy a large riding mower. It will be faster, more productive, and easier to use. They are designed to mow, while tractors are designed to do everything, but less well than specifically designed machines. Mowing tightly around obstacles or fence lines is done more easily and quickly with a riding mower than a 3 point mounted mower in my experience.

agree with 284, a ride on mower will be much better. i have the tractor mounted mower(slasher) and a ride on, the ride on does a better job, manoevres better and easier and does alot less damage to the lawn. look around for a YM146, apparently there is a few around at the moment.
