I have a YM2001 2WD, The PTO shaft always spins no matter the location of the pto lever. I put it in neutral position it doesnt make a bit of difference. I have 4 pto speeds on this machine and do not know what speed this thing is spinning at. could the lever be broke and the reason its not disengaging? if so how would I go about confirming that and fixing it. I really do not like the PTO always spinning, doesnt the yannies have live pto?

Thanks guys

With a mower or other pto operated device connected does it stop when you place the leaver in the neutral position. If it does not Then there is a linkage problem. If it does then your tractor is like mine the oil that is always circulating in the trans is spinning the pto and there is no power to it. I can stop the pto with my hand when it is in neutral but if it is in gear no way. Cannot tell if it is in gear or not by looking.

Well it looks to be spinning the same speed either location, I just dont think im comfortable grabbing that just to "see" if it will stop..lol I do not have any mower attachments at this time, just landscape rake and box blade. I just wish I coud disengage the pto all together.

If there is a linkage issue, where and what would need to be performed to confirm this? something I can do?

Do NOT start your motor. Just go try to turn the pto shaft with your hand while it is not running. If it turns, it is ok and just the rotation of the oil is making it turn without power. If you can not turn it with the lever out of gear then you have a linkage problem.

Thanks Tallyho, I'll try that this evening. If it does not turn freely, how serious are the repairs for a linkage problem?

I was able to easily turn the pto shaft with the lever in neutral, when I put it in pto 1, I can feel the resistance but can turn it with force. So I guess that means its not an issue?

Thanks for the help and suggestions

Right! It is operating normally and just free-wheeling with the rotation of the oil. :)

Smoody,

Remember that most all PTO implements are run in the first gear PTO position only. This should give you about 540 rpm's @ 2,200 rpm's on your tach. If I am wrong, would someone please correct me. Thanks.

Second thought: If you are concerned with the spinning PTO, find a cover to bolt over it for safety. Has anyone seen a Yanmar cover for this? Could be that one of our good parts dealers has them for sale.
