Yanmar YM220
My dad gave me his YM220. It hadn't been run in several months. He got a newer Kubota because he had been having trouble with the Yanmar. I got it started and brought it to my house. It will start and idle all day long. When I start to work with it, it bogs down, and starts pouring white/grey smoke out. Sometimes I can put it in neutral and and work the throttle until the smoke goes away. Sometimes it just sputters and dies. If it dies, it is very hard to start.

I bled the bleeder screws, put a new air filter on, put injector cleaner in the tank. I was hoping for something simple. So far, none of these things has helped.

One other thing...Sometimes while in neutral, if I bring it up to about 1800rpm it will run along and periodically a little stutter and a puff blue/grey smoke comes out.

Any help is greatly appreciated

buy a new fuel bowl, filter, and o ring seal and replace them. then rebleed the fuel system.

Do what great said. If you still have problems with white smoke you may have to pull the head to check head gasket. Are you loosing water out of the radiator ?. If so, I would say possibly, blown head gasket- cracked head - block, etc,. Good luck

My bet is on an internally leaking cooling system. Eliminate the simple problems first. These are all things that should be done periodically Clean fuel system. Check the valves. Pull injectors & have them checked. I can supply manuals & parts if you need them.

My plans for the weekend are:

-Drain fuel tank
-New bowl and o-ring
-Fresh fuel
-New fuel filter
-Check valve clearance

And finally...

-Rub the rabbit's foot.

Thanks for the suggestions

My bet is on an injector problem. I suspect there is a sticking injector or valve, but probably injector. White/blue is excess unburnt fuel. I once had a situation where the tip of one injector broke off and the white smoke rolled out of that 4 cyl. :( and as soon as I stopped the engine died and could not be restarted until I replaced the injector and bled the engine. The open injector tip allowed excessive fuel to pour into the cylinder, and when I stopped the compression forced air back up into the lines. Hence the white smoke and need ofr bleeding the lines. I do not know where that injector tip went--probably out the exhaust. Possibly this is what is happening to your tractor. If the injector valve is staying open allowing excessive fuel in and also permitting air to enter the system at slow speeds.

However, all this to say that a dose of diesel fuel treatment and cleaner may help. Just my thoughts on the situation.

Mike

OPPS--Rereading it looks like you have already tried the cleaner. The next step if the clean filter does not help is to pull the injectors and have them checked.

Finally got around to the tractor this past weekend. Did everything on my list above except check the valve clearance. After doing those items, I worked the tractor for about 1/2 hr with no lost power or bogging down. As of right now, the tractor appears to be running and working like it should.

I can't say for sure which of the things I did was THE solution. Maybe everything played a part...especially the rabbit's foot.

What I think is that ur fuel bowl shrunk over time and u were not getting a complete seal. This allowed air to enter ur fuel system.(sucked in) I bet u had a little drip around ur fuel bowl before u replaced it?
