YM2200 water issue

my new to me YM2200 has been a work hourse so far.......yesterday while shredding, I noticed something.......

I have no overflow tank.....just a tube from the neck of the spout on the radiator.......but it was constantly dripping water? The front screen on the radiator is cleaned before every use, I have noticed lately, that when I am checking the fluids, I have to put some water in the radiator, not alot, but some. Any ideas? bad radiator cap? something more sinister?

I think there should be a recovery tank on it. This is needed to catch the expasion of fluid from the radiator. When the engine cools it siphons the water back into the radiator Most tractors have it. I had a similar problem with my YM1700 but, I had a recovery tank. My tractor was actually loosing water. I did not realize how much water I was loosing and just kept refilling the recovery tank. I guess it got to the point that it lost too much water. It eventually overheated. Turned out to be a blown head gasket. Now I am in the process of rebuilding it.

The good news is that I will some have a rebuilt engine.

It ran ok for 30 years without one.

I would check that there is always water in the radiator sufficient to cover the top of the tubes. If it never goes below that, it's ok. If it goes below that, then there is some new problem after all these years.

An overflow tank is just one of those unnecessary new inventions that makes things more complicated than the old days.

More realistically, it lets you run longer without checking the water and makes it easier to check. But it's not essential. Cars didn't have them for the first 50 years.

You may be right about that after all. If I had not had one on my tractor I would have had to remove the radiator cap and I would have discovered how low the water/coolant really was. I may have been able to just to replace the head gasket and not rebuild the engine......

California is right! I`ve had my 2200 for 12 yr`s. It will spit out any excess coolant.

Simply that the quantity is indeterminable. And there is some new problem that needs to be investigated.

On cars built before the mid-50's it was customary to open the radiator cap and glance inside every time you bought gas. The upper tank was expansion space so it didn't need to be full, so long as there was water present.

I don't have a manual for a 2200 but I expect it says to perform this check daily in the pre-operation walkaround.

California is still right! Work it hard through two or three hot to cold cycles, and the coolant level should stabilize to about one inch below the filler neck.check level when cold,and just have fun!
