I went and looked at a YM2210 today for possible purchase from an individual that has owned it for 8-9 years. It cranked and ran great and I mowed with it's 5ft rotary mower. I left the mower up and it stayed up with the tractor not running the rest of the time we were there(approx 30 min). The powershift transmission was firm but smooth. I saw no leaks. The two issues I found are: the right brake does not work and the pedal sticks in the depressed position and the decompression lever would not move. The owner said he had never used the decompression lever for two reasons: he did not know what it did and he never has had a problem starting the tractor. Are the brakes on these hard to get to and fix? Is the decompression mechanism in the head a hard fix. I did not tap on the lever with anything. It may just need some PB blaster and a few taps with a screwdriver handle. It sounds like it has not been moved in 8-9 years. It appeared to have two access panels on the head that would allow inspection. Another question: Is the engine of the YM2210 (2T90 I believe) known for its reliability? Any advice will be much appreciated!!!!!

I can only speak to the 226D. On the 226D, there is fairly easy access to the brakes by unbolting 4 or 5 bolts off a cover near the axle. My guess would be a broken spring or something is locked up by rust. Wouldn't hurt to look at the external mechanism first in case it's jammed by a stick or something.

I would suggest spraying PB blaster on the external decompression linkage first to see if that frees it up. I'm not familiar with the inner workings of it, but never had any problem with mine.

Someone else may have more useful information about your particular unit.

Everything that I have heard is that 2 cylinder is one tough engine!!!! With better economy even than the 3 cyl and better low-end torque. Sounds like it is in good condition too. Besides the 2 has a distinctive sound under load that loved by many.

I use my decompression lever always to cold start my 2210. My unit has been very good to me. I don't think anything is all that hard to repair if one is a little bit mechanical. The 2t90 engine is good the trans is better...

Can't say for sure, of course, but I'd almost bet the rent money on it being a stuck cable. You can take it loose on the engine side very easily and test it. If that's all it is, a little soaking with penetrating oil should free it up - at least it did mine.

The decompression does not have a cable. It has a rod linkage which all moves freely. I tried to move the actual rod/lever that comes out of the valve cover and could not. It feels like it is seized and I did not put a lot of force on it because I did not want to be the one to break it off. We are down here in South Georgia where it barely freezes so this feature on these tractors is really not needed. This is why it has not moved in 8-9 years. My guess is that it is a rod with fingers on it that when rotated pushes select valves open. If any one has a parts diagram for this area of the YM2210's engine it would be helpful. Thanks!!

Stuck brake: If it's the same mechanism as YM2000 it's simple.

There's an o-ring where the shaft enters the housing, to keep out water. This makes it impossible to free a stuck shaft from outside with penetrating oil, but it's simple to pull the cover. The shoes and anchor assembly comes out with the cover. Disassemble everything to get the brake shoes out of the way, then flush out the brake dust that made it stick, and polish the shaft to move smoothly where it goes through the cover.

I posted the following reply to someone long ago:

On mine, considering safety, I left the wheel installed and worked in the cramped space to remove the cover and brake assembly. It would go easier *if* you can safely block up the tractor and remove the wheel. I expect overall time is about an hour either way.

Ed,
Two main reasons to use decomp: Gets rid of any moisture built up in the cylinders, gets oil up to pressure. Here in Texas, I use mine every time.

Yep Bruce is correct! Those would be the reasons for using it when it is warm. I use mine all summer and also it helps with cold starting in winter.
