occasionally my YM240 will pop out of high range. This is one part of the tractor I haven't worked on. I have the manuals for it, just wanted to ask how to attack this from folks with experience. jbrd

I don't have experience but not slow to chime in. There have been numerous threads on your problem with the ym2000 which I believe has the same transmission as your 240. Some have used bungee cords on the shift lever to hold it in gear. Some have gone all out and replaced the hi/lo gears. I believe this is the gears up to s/n 11522. Not saying this is what you need to do, just showing what the gears look like. There is a gentleman on the Yanmar "Mytractorforum" that just got through changing his out on a 2000. I know he stated the transmission has to be removed to accomplish this. I know if it were mine I would try bungee cords before removing the transmission. Could be the ball and detents not holding also. I've rambled enough. :D

Here's how I attacked it - I put the bungee back on that had been on the tractor when I bough it.

With the big loader sub-frame under this YM240 it will be a major project if I ever have to split the tractor for a clutch or something. Until then the bungee does the job with no hassle. It doesn't need to be adjusted to shift Hi/Low, it simply slides down the shift lever. I've run it like this for 9+ years and it's never jumped out with the bungee installed.

I can't find the old post but Danny Parker (PEQ), an experienced Yanmar mechanic, once posted that replacing the gears as Winston described is the only thing that will fix it. He said just a new detent spring (which also requires splitting the tractor) won't do it.
