could someone tell me the output, maximum, in amps for the OEM alternator on Yanmar YM2500? I had mine rebuilt, works fine, just need specs on it for installing additional lighting. thanks to all.

No, it's not much. The charging system on these units wasn't designed to do anything beyond re-charge what was lost in starting. We find the output on most units actually measures closer to 14. You can kill a battery with enought starts followed by short run times.

"The battery should be fully charged using a regular charger at least once a month." Source: Operation Manual, YM240.

I run HF's little $4.99 charger overnight if the tractor hasn't been started for several days and dormant voltage shows 12.6 or below. This seems to work; the last battery made it past its eighth birthday.

We strongly encourage customers to start their tractor every couple weeks and just ride around if nothing else. We use some trickle chargers here, and I just ordered our first smart charger....the new, seemingly really nifty technology...to try. Even a good trickle charger can overcharge if left on continuously, and supposedly the smart chargers don't do that.

... and the cheap ones will cook the water out, even if the voltage never exceeds 13.3.

I used to leave the $5 charger on when I would be away for a few days. After a year of that, the battery water level was way down into the plates. I switched to checking it with a voltmeter and charging only when needed.

A 'smart charger' would do this for you automatically.
