I am helping a friend with overhauling his YM336D engine which he purchased in pieces. We are having a heck of time installing the crankshaft. It has the two center main bearing's caps that have to be installed on crankshaft and then installed into the block. We have the F casing mark installed toward the flywheel and they are in the proper locations as per the service manual oil hole and bolts that secure the caps are in the right place. They seem too tight for the block bores they are supposed to fit into. We did not take this engine apart but it seems they are way to tight. It is a small block and we have it mounted on an engine stand ( on starter side). Is that distorting the block enough to not allow them to start into the block bores? That sounds crazy but we are really scratching our heads on this. Please any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Don't know it could make any difference but the I&T manual states to stand cylinder block on it's front face in order to install the crankshaft from above.

We tried that while it was in the engine stand, but we will try it on a work table and removed from stand.

Do you know for a fact it is the right crank? They may have replaced parts if it has been pulled to pieces as normally no one pulls a good engine to bits....

You might check your front bearing because you inserting the crank in it at the same time. I stood mine on it's end and supported the crank with the engine hoist then slowly lowered it while guiding it. Good luck.

OK I figured it out. I wrongly assumed cylinder one was the first cylinder in the front of the block. Number 1 is the rear cylinder closest to the flywheel. The round bearing cap with the thrust face goes between crankshaft throws 1 and 2. We had it between 2 and 3 by assuming number one was in the front. I put the block on end front down and the crankshaft dropped right in after moving the thrust bearing cap. All is well. Thanks for all the responses.

I suspected that also and checked it it was fine.
