I want to add a pair of guide wheels to my york rake and i want to build them myself. I've searched the posts here and found some older ones that don't reflect todays supplies and prices. So my question is, has anybody recently added guide wheels and where did you get your supplies (wheels with zerk fittings) and what did you use to make them adjustable ? Pictures would be very helpful. I have a basic idea of what I want to do but there's nothing like prior experiance and pictures to get it right. I do have welders and plenty of steel stock but just want to get it right the first time. One problem I see already is where I want to weld the brackets on, the bolts for the tines are in the way. I know this is an old beat to death topic but a little help would be appreciated. I have a King Kutter 6' Rake.

Sounds like you have the skills and wherewithall so I think it is doable. Here are some gauge wheel photos on my 8' York RI. Notice the 1/2" plate anchoring the gauge wheel strut. The bolts are also holding the tines below in place. Drill your plate to match your bolt pattern. The tires are 13X6.50-6 2 ply rating at 14lbs psi. If you need any measurements, let me know.
If you go on the York Rake (a division of York Modern Corp) website you will find the gauge wheel accessory for sale, not cheap, around $500.00.
Good luck!

Get them from ebay for $100 + ship. I paid around $120 shipped and put them on a King Kutter 7' rake.

NEW Bush Hog Gauge Wheels for Landscape Rakes (2) - eBay (item 290348887111 end time Apr-09-10 07:22:18 PDT)
I just pulled up your ebay link and saw that the dealer is Rosseel's out of Michigan. I bought a new Woods BH90-X backhoe from them last year and saved several THOUSAND dollars. They are a real brick and mortar over the counter country type store with a national high volume, low profit internet sales desk. I was 100% satisfied with the transaction which included the BH being shipped out here to California. If the gauge wheels will fit your rig-go for it.

probally for the price tires will cost, the e-bay item might be the way to go with a little adapting. nickle plate thanks for the pictures. they will make it much easier.

The ebay one is pretty nice. Built sturdy and has good adjustment. For $100 it is very hard to beat. Mine needs some extension due to my Kubota BX having to use a really short top-link to lift my 7' rake as high as I like for carrying.

the tire looks like a walk behind spreader tires, think thell hold 300 lbs?
I agree with you. If you get these heavy 3-pt rakes out on uneven and unlevel surfaces I can only speculate that a 6" wheel will outperform a 4" wheel. My 8' York RI rake has 1-1/2" square bar stock struts the connect the guage wheels to the tined frame. Hopefully that will give you some indication as to the stresses on that gauge wheel system.

I have a York rake with factory wheels and they are a pain to tighten down. The wing nut keeps loosening with vibration. I've put a second wing nut on them and taken to carrying a little pipe to tighten them.

Question: Wouldn't the rake arm need to extend further back to provide more leveling? It looks like Rosseel's are pretty short, right up close to the rake. Would one need to extend them out further back? Or am I wrong in my assumption?

Gage wheels seem like the finishing touch on a number of implements, and yes, I've been looking at the York wheel kit for quite a while. Rosseel's will no doubt be a great deal, if they do the job.

I agree. I took off my gauge wheels and used one of them to make a tailwheel. It extends about 4 feet behind the rake. It does a much better job of leveling.

I know this isn't a rake, but this is an idea, I am working on for my box blade. The box blade has the same issue the rake has. The tractor's rear tire has too much control of the up and down movement. I will send a working PDF file if you email me. The pdf file is to large to post.
