[FONT=DDG_ProximaNova]A child from Virginia is dead after a World War II-era hand grenade believed to be inactive exploded, according to authorities. The child was killed on Dec. 23 by a MK2 grenade that was likely purchased at the Fancy Flea Antique Mall in Shallotte,"

Absolutely terrible to hear about this sad incident. Europeans know from experience, all about these discarded, unused, buried, submerged and supposedly inactive munitions; they are all dangerous and potential killers to everyone.

When I was a kid we lived in Germany from '68-'72. We lived off-base and there was a large field next to the house we lived in. My brother and I would find all sorts of stuff in the field - belt buckles, buttons... and bullets. I remember coming out of the field one day with a handful of bullets and our elderly German neighbor lady (who'd lost an arm during the War) went crazy making us put them down. My dad ended up taking them to the SP's at the base to dispose of them.

Where I grew up on the West coast of FL there was a US Army air corps training base and they used to practice bombing runs off the north end of the barrier island...to this day every now and then a live ordinance will wash up and they close the beach until a team from MacDill AFB comes and gets it or sometimes they will detonate on site because of the possible volatility...

My uncle brought me back a grenade from WW2. It had a hole in the bottom and was empty. My friend & I use to practice throwing it. No idea where it is now .............

I have a MK-2 pineapple one with a hole drilled in the bottom...

I don't know when holes started to be drilled in the bottom, which is dangerous to do, but practice grenades were painted blue to denote they weren't live.. but even those can be made live again.. deactivated guns can be made operational too.. as far as bullets in the hands of a sane adult, I don't see a danger.. by the way, bullets not in a gun just go pop, and won't kill anyone..

If I found this one I don't think I'd take it home. Lost nuclear bomb off Savannah GA coast.

The Tybee Island mid-air collision was an incident on February 5, 1958, in which the United States Air Force lost a 7,600-pound (3,400 kg) Mark 15 nuclear bomb in the waters off Tybee Island near Savannah, Georgia, United States. During a practice exercise, an F-86 fighter plane collided with the B-47 bomber carrying the bomb. To protect the aircrew from a possible detonation in the event of a crash, the bomb was jettisoned. Following several unsuccessful searches, the bomb was presumed lost somewhere in Wassaw Sound off the shores of Tybee Island.
