The Following pictures were taken at a shop in Fontana , CA. that was working on my truck . Had some time , so I was roaming through shop and came across the liners and pistons taken out of a volvo that was also in shop .

I am thinking that it had to make at least a little racket when everything came apart if not BEFORE !

Shop said and I assumed also , that block was likely toast also , but they went as far as they were going to and truck was going to be towed out to another shop .

Note : The 2'nd picture , were you are looking down the sleeve from the top , is what is left of the top of the piston . It is seized / welded to the liner .

Ironically , That truck had half the miles on it that mine does . Last truck , which was a '98 Freightliner had 1,072,436 miles on engine when I traded it in . Engine and rest of drive train had no issue's , but there were a lot of little things that were driving me crazy .

To trade that truck in , had to have a engine dyno done . 430 / 470 multi rate Detroit Diesel was still putting 452 h.p. to the ground at the drives according to the local Cat dealer , ( they have the only local engine dyno around here ) . They thought I had just had it rebuilt and we're rather shocked that it had not and that I was trading it in .

So everybody , Treat them little tractor engines nice , and they may very well out live you , which is $$$ in your pocket .

Take Care ,

Ya think it was over-fueled just a tad?
Doesn't look oil related. Looks like someone wanted a little more HP.
Was that over at Rush Truck?

OH Boy, Fontana CA. does that bring back memories. I know you said that engine was in a Volvo, but was it a volvo engine? I traded my "93 FLD120 w/1,228,000 mi. the engine was untouched, trans and rears were untouched, the clutch was replaced at 958,000 miles, it had a 60 series Detroit. It was 5 yrs old when I traded it for a '98 Volvo w/60 series Detroit. I know the Volvo was 5 yrs newer, but of all the trucks that I drove, IH, KW, Peterbilt, Freightliner, it was the quietest, best riding, best handling truck. Retired in '04 and there have been times that I miss it till I remember all the stuff that goes with the job.

FredH, What were you using for oil in your last truck, dino or synthetic?

I have seen documented evidence from Amsoil about a truck that had 500k and was being traded in. Dealer wanted it overhauled, but owner made a bet instead. Dealer was to tear it down and mic it out. If it was okay, dealer ate the whole thing. If it needed overhaul the trucker paid for it in the price of the truck.

When it was torn down, everything was fine and the dealer had to eat it. This was back in the late 80's when I saw the piece in an Amsoil dealer periodical. Think the engine was a 400 Cummins, but will not swear to it. The guy was using Amsoil since almost new.

Note : That was NOT my engine

Truck was in little shop down the street from Rush truck center on Slover just of Cherry street . Think it was a detroit engine but would not swear to it , all though pretty sure .

Both my trucks have had nothing but Rotella 10/40 regular oil , changed evey 15,000 miles . After I reach 600,000 miles , I start adding 1 gallon of Lucas oil treatment every change .

When I first seen the piston , My initial thought was , " Man that had to make a racket ! " . But in thinking about it , Likely no louder that a tire blowing on a truck on the opposite side of the freeway , or be fueling and another truck down the way blows an air bag on their suspension , even had a truck a few months ago pull in next to me in rest area , Shut off truck same time they set brakes and had already made it several steps from truck when the turbo let loose . That driver never had a clue that even though engine is off , that turbo was still spinning , ( and hot with no oil going to it ).

Sure likely though that it made some ugly noises !;)
