Thank you whistlepig. That's certainly coming up. Today I removed the fuel filter and sediment bowl. OK, now I know what that thing is supposed to look like inside. Guess what? The sediment bowl was cracked. Of course the crack was facing the back so I never saw it, plus, it was not clear as I mentioned before.
Now, I don't know for sure if that was the cause because I never saw a leak from it but I'm thinking that it is important and so I am going to get a new one.
Again, thanks for all your help. More to come once I get this.

Good job finding the crack, let us know how it works out.

OK, got my new sediment bowl. Installed the new filter, O rings, etc. I was expecting things to run smoothly from there but no such luck.

Basically, I was hoping that gravity would draw diesel and fill up the filter and bowl. I wasn't getting any fuel to manually use the lift pump. If I cracked the bolt on the filter head then I could get all the fuel I ever needed but none to the injectors. If I closed up bolt on the filter head, I would again not get any fuel flow.

What is suppose to happen after one puts a new fuel filter on? Is there some special procedure? I just saw a post where the person "pre-filled" the filter. Is that it?

Thanks. This is a slight detour to my air leak issue but hopefully it's related.

Hopefully some tractor experts will add to this, but on my old 82 Peugeot 504D, after changing the filter --or opening the fuel system up-- it was necessary to prime the system; the engine-driven injector pump wouldn't work dry, it had to be filled with diesel, like an old hand-operated well pump.

Filling the filter "cup" helps a lot, but then I had to use a manual lever-operated diaphragm pump that was on top of the filter to get the fuel in and all the air out.... there was a bleed screw to loosen and watch for air bubbles to disappear and the fuel to run clear.

BTW- if that's what you have, a diaphragm pump for priming: if the diaphragm ruptures, that can allow air to be introduced into the system. That's what happened on my Peugeot, and it took me quite a while --and lots of choice words-- to finally figure it out.
