Your Social Security and Military Service Credits

I learned this when I was working federal civil service and found out we could get years of service added to our civil service pension if we paid the 7% of the military wages into the Civil Service Pension Plan. i was in the reserves and getting as many as 100 paid days of ACDU/ACDUTRA many years. Really added up for a small investment. You have to have documentation to back up those years. Luckily I had a copy of every set of orders and pay vouchers including a bunch of non-pay orders that counted as ACDU. As it turned out a day of military duty counted on 3 retirement plans, SS, Civil Service, and Military.

Unfortunately a lot of this stuff is poorly disseminated and folks get screwed out of their just due.

A lot of folks still do not realize the SS annuity is based on an average the highest 35 years of creditable service income. The old discussion about Quarters went away with the Model T. There is a SS chart that gives the minimum yearly income that establishes that as a base year. Years less than 35 go into the averaging a a $0. Guess how that skewes the equation. That may be a good reason to not file for a reduced annuity at less than, I guess 67, and get those 0 years covered.
