goeduck - I think that's the bottom line. At these social gatherings, I was just another "trinket". Wear nice pair of slacks, sport shirt, shined shoes. Never mention that I lived in the country, drove a tractor or, for God's sake, got any of that "country stuff" on my body.
Soooo...... I came in my Mucks, Carhartt bibs and a nice Scottish plaid flannel shirt. The Animal beer and bratwurst were an added touch. It worked.
I think, at that "last supper" my User ID was CRAP. I could see steam coming out my sister's ears.
