Yuchai YC15-7 Mini Excavator

I had never seen a Yuchai mini ex until recently. I noticed the engine data plate says it has a "Perkins Shibaura" engine. As a grey market fan, I'm very familiar with the old Shibauras and the products they have made for Ford/NH. Are these engines actual Perkins design made by Shibaura or Shibaura engines w/ Perkins name? Anyone had any experience with these specific engines and their parts availability or Yuchai equipment.

I don't believe they actually currently have a license to the Perkins name. I recall reading a chinese company entered into an agreement to licence the perkins design but then broke it off and continued to use the name. I don't think you'll get far with the chinese engine number at the perkins shop.

While Yuchai is a Chinese company, Shibaura is a Japanese company, I believe. That may or may not affect the Perkins licensing of the engine. I know a couple of guys who have Yuchai dozers and like them a lot, but I don't know anyone with one of the excavators. Yuchai makes, as I understand it, a huge amount of heavy equipment for domestic Chinese consumption, and I've seen some pretty large Yuchai excavators in the Caribbean. They looked pretty darn well made, too.
