Oil & Fuel Yuck, The smell of diesel.

Now that I have your attention:
After reviewing the "lurking" comments, I think I have figured out the tractor obsession. 4 yrs. ago I purchased 40ac. for a future homesite ( it is "camp " now ) and bought my 1st tractor 2 yrs ago ( this site has educated me extremely, thanks ). Been a city boy all my life so far,I work in an injection molding facilty for 18yrs now, next to a trucking co. For all these years, when our exhaust fans would turn on, the smell of diesel would fill the air....turned my stomach. That has all changed. Since 2yrs of brush-hogging and FEL work, anytime the fans come on,all I can think of is: " I can't wait for spring to use that tractor and can't wait until this day is over to drive out and get some seat-time." It sits in my garage in the city for the winter. I find myself going out sometimes at night to climb-in, sit-down and ponder. Now I truely know what " seat-time & Tractorphliia is about, but at least it is a good addiction.....Thanks to all

I can remember going to tractor pulls when I was a kid and seeing big JD's and IH's spewing out black smoke and the smell of burnt diesel fuel that accompanied it. When I smell diesel smoke from my truck or tractor it still reminds me of watching tractor pulls as a kid. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Diesel fumes remind me of TWO different things. I've been stuck behind a city bus too many times on the way to work. YUCK!

But then there's diesel and fresh turned dirt smell mixed that reminds me of days gone by, plowing for hours on end. YEAH!

Diesel fuel, both fresh and burnt always triggers the same memories in me also.

Whenever I smell diesel, I'm back on the flightdeck of the now scrap metal rendered Rosey with all the sites, sounds and smells of the the JP fueled Detroit slant 6 diesel powered tugs hauling around the GTC105 gas turbine compressors to start the JP burning J59 engines of the mighty Phantom, the deadly A6 Intruder and the A7 Crusader. Add in the Rolls Royce powered AV8A Harrier as well as the other jet engines and you get mass mayhem, dangerous environs and the smell of burnt fuel in the mornings, ahhhhhhhh yes, it just don't get any better than that /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That nostalgic diesel feeling tends to hit me in the winter, when dumptrucks & hydraulic equipment are warming up in the yard to go battle mother nature. It's like being in love or food poisioning, you can't explain it but you sure as h@#l know it when got it! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That is exactly what It reminds me of also. I was on the Lincoln V-2 Div. during the gulf war and every time i smell diesel it brings back those memories. Isn't it funny that the longer you are off the deck the more you only remember to good times and not the 48+ hours straight of flight ops during CQ. ( carrier qualifications for the non squids out there) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Dangerous for sure, life insurance was unobtainable. I tried to get more while working the deck, no dice !! The fumes up there are undescribable, I guess you just have to get a good whiff of it once and then your hooked.

BTW, you are dating yourself a little bit there with the Phantom and Crusader references. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif can't say we shot off any of those but A-6's were a dime a dozen.

Dating myself LOL, we're still probably shaving with the steel off of the Ole Rosey /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif We were still flying F4 Phantoms as our primary fighter, the TomCat (which is now being replaced with the Super Hornet) hadn't totally replaced 'em all at that time. The A6 is still the best pound for pound attack aircraft ever designed IMHO /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I was TAD to AIMD on her last Med cruise. My squadron was the 1st of it's kind to CQ on a fixed wing carrier. Hint "Harrier". I was with VMA 231. I weren't no squid /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
The Chief of the GSE shop was an instructor of mine back in A school so he put me up on the flightdeck. I was the only AIMD jarhead on the flightdeck and it was great.

We ran JP fuel in the diesels without any problems. The smell was the same tho and it's forever "burnt" in the ole brain housing group /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
