kicking around the idea of buying one. Any one have a comment about them? The price is up to $4200 now with a 48" deck.

Are you sure about the model number? JD doesn't list a X330 "R". You mention the price is "up to $4200", are you bidding on a used machine? A new X330 with 48-inch deck lists for $4399.

how much grass do you plan to cut ?

It appears that this mower can either have a 24hp Briggs or a 23 HP Kawasaki engine, which may account for price differences. I personally think Kawasaki engines are worth the premium.

The Briggs on my Z225 made it to about 220 hours and got to be such a pain that I replaced it with a different engine made for Husqvarna.

I am planning to just do the trimming with it on about a 3 acre yard. I have a RFM behind my 3039R & cab for the rest of it.

I have been told by several folks that the quality JD products sold at Home Depot is less than at a JD dealer. Don’t know if that is true or not.

I'm guessing the people that assemble them at Home Depot may not be as reliable as a Deere trained mechanic at a dealership, so you may be correct.

I've got the Z355E with the 48" deck and have had it for just over a year now. I probably mow 2.5 acres around the house, driveway and front 'horse exercise' area. It's worked flawlessly, although I do have to keep my mouth shut, due to rough ground. :) It's a non-commercial so there's not a lot of seat suspension.

I did purchase mine from my JD Dealership. When they delivered it, one of the front caster wheels had lost the bead = they immediately replaced/repaired it.

It's a LOT of fun (and quick) once you get the hang of steering it.

Oh, and I also purchased the optional towing package/bumper... 'cause you never know when you might need it.

Here is an update;
I talked myself out of the Z355R and bought a Z545R.
I took it for a test spin down the driveway and decided I need to practice before I start trimming around anything expensive.

Good stuff and congratulations.

When my Z-trac was delivered, the Dealership bloke recommended that I practice driving it around the property without the mower engaged & the deck up until I got the 'hang of it'. I found that if you kept the left control at a steady 'speed' and used the right control to 'steer' was best... just don't 'get cocky'. :D

What size deck did you get?

Wagtail
Good point, but in the States we drive on the right so we would hold the right control steady and use the left to "steer". :D :D :D ;);)

I got the 60" deck.

Okay, my first findings. When things get exciting, my feet do nothing about crash avoidance. And, when I let loose of the handlebars, it keeps moving...neutral is hard to find in the second before a crash.

My yard needs mowed for the weekend but I think I'd better mow the driveway for a few hours first.
