I just read this article about how the newly formulated oils have reduced zddp, which is a anti wear additive. It might not effect your newer tractor engines, but it might effect your older engines. This concerns gasoline engines mostly. Dusty

This happened a short time ago. I think it was EPA driven.

The ZDDP which is a zinc compound clogs up the particulate filter on the new 2007 diesel engines. Oil manufacturers have had to replace the zinc with other additives that will not plug up these filters. Other additives in the new oil have also had their levels reduced to meet the new CJ-4 API standard.

The new CJ-4 oil is actually more robust than any previous engine oil. The new additive packages will provide greater wear protection than previous spec oils. This is not the first time zinc has been reduced. As diesel engines become more emission friendly so does their oil.

One big drawback to the new oil is that it is more expensive than the CI-4 and CI-4 Plus oils. It is completly backwards compatible with all previous API categories. In fact if you look at the spec sheets of most of the new CJ-4 oils you will find most of them also now meet the SM gas engine API spec. Previously most only met the SL spec.

Whatever you do DO NOT USE CI-4/CI-4 PLUS OIL IN A 2007 SPEC DIESEL ENGINE (road trucks). You will destroy your $7000 particulate filter. Only use CJ-4 oil in the new emissions engines.

As far as gas engines go. I have been telling customers for years to use diesel rated oil in their vintage gas engines. Diesel engine oil has alway's had a better additive package of high preasure anti-wear additives. Mainly due to the incresed loads that diesel engines create compared to gas engines.

I'm going to do some extrapolation here, which is always dangerous.

2006 diesel truck, has no particulate filter.

2007 diesel truck, has $7000 particulate filter.

Does this mean a $7k jump in '07 list price for comparable '06?

You can add some STP or other oil additive for older engines if you need your zinc.

On new "on road" medium duty trucks and road tractors (the kind that haul trailers, ie. 18 wheelers) yes. The price of a new truck in 2007 will be at least $7,000 to $10,000 more than a 2006 model year truck. That's why truck fleet companies are in a rush to buy as many 06 models as they can.

I think that price increase is WAY over done here. If you go Ford.com and look around the RETAIL is about $5K more.

Well I have spoken with Freightliner, Kenworth, Navistar (International) and Peterbilt dealer salesman in my area and the average price increase due to the new emissions systems is $7-10K. Can't speak for Ford but then again, their not a real heavy duty truck builder.

One of my local oil customers just placed a order for 6 new 2007 model year BlueBird school bus's and the price is $9,500 more for the exact model bus he bought this year (2006). He was told over $8,500 of that is due to the new emissions systems on the 07 Caterpillar C7 engine. 2006 BlueBird bus was $89,000. 2007 BlueBird bus is going to cost him $,98,500.

So if a bus is $89K and it went up 7 to 10K? Not saying you are wrong but it does not add up. An increase of over 11% for a 89K item? You can buy a new engine in that bus for that...It has to be retail nad give it 6 months. Price will come down since the price is way out of balance.

The remainder of the price increase is just the usual yearly new model year price increase. The price of the emissions system is not just on the engine. The new 07 engines have alot of new emissions components on the engine and also a drastically redesigned exhaust system that includes a converter/particulate filter system. The $7-10K increase in the engine price is for the whole emissions package, engine changes and the filter system.

Have you actually seen the new engines? I have and it ain't pretty. The right side of the block that at one point only had a exhaust manifold, turbo and oil cooler is now completly covered in emissions components. You can barely even see the engine block anymore.

You show me the engine block in this picture. Hmm, completly hidden behind emissions components.

The new Caterpillar filter system.

And here's the $10-15K (what I have heard) machine that cleans the new particulate filters.
