A good friend of mine had a Mom and Pop Backhoe business for 50 years...
In 2003 he paid 62k for an International 4700 single axle dump with a 33,000 gvw and a 7 yard box.
It's been parked for 4 years and started weekly...
Last week he asked me if I wanted it...
It's a beautiful truck and spotless... even the alcoa aluminum rims have a mirror finish and the engine is as clean as a whistle.
Here's the problem... the truck must be retrofitted with either a new 2010 or newer engine or about 20k worth or emission upgrades to be street legal in California under the Heavy Truck Diesel Smog Regs.
If the Truck was tagged under 26,000 GVW it could continue to be operated until 2020 and then would need to be retired or retrofitted.
Either way... it is going to cost big money to use it because the law has changed.
Called the Highway Patrol to ask about changing the GVW and was told this is not possible once registered.
As much as I would like to have it... it looks like it's been regulated to scrap/salvage value.
This must be just a California thing because online, trucks like this sell for $12,000 to 18,000 and more.
I would also need to get a drivers license upgrade because it's over 26,000 GVW and not a Recreational Vehicle...
Any ideas?
