Just posting this up for future reference since I didn't find much info while searching the boards.

After adding the ROPS to my 336D I decided to add lights for plowing. Two forward facing 55w and one rear facing 55w. As you all know the stock 15 amp alternator won't keep up with the draw from these lights.

After a few hours of searching and crossing numbers I was able to find a 35 amp bolt in alternator upgrade that was available from O'Reilly's Auto Parts for a whopping $32.99 plus a $4.50 core charge.

O'Reilly's P/N 14105 - Ultima Import packaged, Mitsubishi Alternator

This P/N can come with one of three possible wiring connections on the back. Mine came with a 4 wire rectangular plug but also included a short adapter harness for the "T" style electrical connection on the factory wiring.

To eliminate this short adapter harness all I had to do was release the spade connectors from the adapters plug and the factory plug. The factory spade connectors were then inserted into the new rectangular plug that came from the jumper harness. This gives a factory appearance and makes for a very clean, plug-n-play installation.

Now the system shows a charge even at idle with all three 55w lights on. A simple upgrade that was well worth the time.

The voltage regulator is next on the list. This was also a simple cross thru Rock Auto. Cost was $22.79 plus shipping.

Rock Auto P/N VR121 - Standard Motor Products brand

The regulator should be here in a few days and will complete my charging system upgrade. I didn't need to replace it for proper function of the alternator but the existing regulator has a missing screw from the cover and was very dirty inside. For the cost it was just good insurance.

Maybe some day it will. LOL! That was my grandfathers truck, purchased brand new, and has sat out in the sun for the last 20 years undriven. He loved that goofy truck and I'm going to restore the interior and keep her for a parts chaser. I think he would get a kick out of that if he was still around.

I'll post confirmation on the voltage regulator as soon as it hits the ground. I'm 99.9% sure that it will be correct.

Did you have the an original dynamo?. Any chance you could post a pic of the dynamo and the plugs?. Wondering if my tractor used the same dynamo.

The 336D uses an actual 15 amp alternator. My 186D has the dynamo.

Ok. Thanks....I was hoping there was a direct alternator upgrade for the dynamo

Does your 2020D have room for an alternator? My 186D has a hose directly behind the dynamo. No way I'm going to be able to get an actual alternator in the stock location.

On another note...

When I was shutting the shop down this evening I walked past the Hinomoto E2302 that I'm restoring. I happened to glance at the alternator on it and guess what? Same alternator. Looks like this 35 amp upgrade applies to at least the Hinomoto E2302 and E2304 too. That one will get the upgrade too. =)

on my 2020, it's very tight. I would have to fabricate a bracket to make it fit

Gypsyman, what was the original application for your replacement alternator? I think we've seen this same question before and so far as I know, nobody has posted what widely-used alternator is a replacement for the late 70's, early-80's Yanmars. (The Powershift era).

Just a FYI for anybody researching this in the future: Yanmars earlier than YM336 used the same Hitachi (not Mitsubishi) alternator and matching regulator that Datsun (Nissan) used in 1971~73. The 35 amp Hitachi alternator listed for Datsun without air conditioning is a direct bolt-in, plug compatible replacement for the 15 amp alternator that Yanmar put on YM1900 and YM2000. The 50 amp alternator that Datsun used with A/C bolts in and uses the same regulator, but physically it's a little fatter so it might need a longer adjusting arm and belt. After '73 Datsun used the same regulator for a few more years but went to a different Hitachi alternator. These Hitachi parts are still inexpensive and available everywhere. Tell the counterman you have a Datsun.

I don't know if these early components are suitable for later Yanmars. But if Yanmar continued to use that regulator, then perhaps a later 70's Datsun alternator is the right match. Anybody know?

Sound like the same unit. The alternator that I recieved just happened to be a Mitsubishi brand. The alternator and regulator I used were for a 1974 Nissan B210 and quite a few other applications.

Gypsy, I know this is a stale thread but I was wondering (besides the dandy alternator information) about your cool Cozy Cab top. Did you add that? Which one is it? Is it very functional and did you pay $500 for it?!

Thanks for a great post (2 years later!).

I don't recall the cost but yes, I added the folding ROPS and Cozy Cab. Both from Hoye I believe.
