Tiller Tillers; Why buy anything but County Line?

If it "wears out" and breaks, I say shame on you for not servicing your equipment. If a good, properly tensioned chain breaks because of not being sized properly, I say shame on the manufacturer for selling us junk! (Maybe I should also mention I'm a Millwright by trade)

Speaking from a retired Machinist and Toolmaker's POV, A machine would need to have x number of usable hours published when it was bought new. If it was suggested to last 1000 hours, a user would know to change the part before reaching the 1000 hours. If you go past 1000 and a part breaks, you are on your own. I know of no parameters setup for farming tools? Ken Sweet

That's a shame. We spend lots of money on this equipment, and if a known part like a roller chain is known to break and cause all kinds of damage, you would think there would be some type of maintenance schedule offered by the manufacturer so the owner could catch the problem before it's too late. I know if I buy one with a chain drive, that will be something I watch.

We've had a number of over head cam engines with "interference" valves. If the timing chain (or belt) snaps, the valves are known to go through the pistons. The schedules do call for these belts/chains to be replaced at X miles for prevention. But, an engine timing chain/belt is in such a controlled environment compared to a farm implement. Far too many variable in terms of use, proper maintenance, storage, climate, etc. with anything by way of Ag equipment.

Common sense, I guess. Check your equipment. Maintain it. If you suspect a belt or chain, replace it before it breaks. The reality is that few folks do. They pound on stuff until it breaks or lets them down. Shrug. :confused3:

Then, they go buy a new one to treat it essentially the same way they treated the previous machine. :)

We sell the 5 Ft Tarter above delivered to a PA Business or truck terminal (Shipping Zone 2) for $1855. It is forward or reverse rotation. We also sell the Phoenix line, If you prefer Italian workmanship. Ken Sweet

How much HP would I need to run a 5ft tiller? Same question for a six foot tiller?

Is there a way to order parts for a Tarter tiller online or would I have to go through a dealer?

20 to 25HP for a 5 ft tiller. I have the 5ft tiller made by Tarter ad it's a nice tiller.... Really well made and up here in CT we grow rocks... I hit a bowling ball sized rock on every pass... you remove them but mother earth keep giving birth to more every year.

Chris

My L3710 claims 31.5 pto hp and handles the 6ft tiller pretty well in wet clay but I have to go slow on the first pass. It'll go through unplowed pasture too but again at a slow pace. After the clay has been worked once and isn't overly wet I can maintain a better pace. Last year was a wet spring here and I bet I tilled our garden plot 6 times over several weeks before I was happy with it. The clay kept clumping badly. That was the first time with the garden in that area. I spread cut green grass on it all mowing season last year in hopes of improving the clay soil and to keep weeds down.

As far as parts, I don't know and haven't needed any yet.

I have a 5 foot Farm King. I bought it through my dealer. Paid more for it than what I would have if I went to a KK or like. This tiller was painted from Farm King with the New Holland paint. He had a few of them there and said he can order them any color he wanted.

I do have a clutch on mine but in the second year maybe 20 hours on it I broke my chain. There was no damage to anything. Dealer replaced chain free

Did you do the annual slip clutch maintenance where you check to ensure its slipping by loosening all the spring bolts and then re adjust to proper spring length. Or was the chain just defective.
Coworker wadded up his drive shaft because he didn't do this check

I'm glad we're seeing some positive feedback from Tarter users, I haven't read much about the brand on TBN until now. Does anybody have any experience with Tarter for getting replacement parts for implements bought from Tractor Supply? I like the fact you can order King Kutter parts directly from their website. Yeah, I'm one of those smaller acreage users who'd probably only use a tiller a couple times a year. I rented a land pride to do our garden, it was beat to **** and only 50 inches wide, it did the job but I'd like a reasonably-priced six footer.

I've got a 4 ft TSC tiller, works great. It's gear drive, forward rotation. Seams built heavy enough and I believe it's was made by KK. I take the pto shaft off after I'm done with it in the fall and back off the springs on the slip clutch.
