Tractor for 7 acres

Noticed no one asked about your budget. I was very excited about a 30 hp CAT Challenger model; the salesman was terrific...versus the idiot at NH. However, I did go with a grey market model just because less than $2300 was more appealing than $17,000. For the price of a 60 year old Ford, I got 4x4 too. Yes, I'm taking somewhat of a risk but, this site offers a tremendous amount of support that I hope will be of assistance should I run into trouble. Check things out; apparently the grey markets haven't had the "American" modifications put on them so they don't have JD, NH, et cetera labels. Chinese; appealing but I foresee political interference.
Before anyone takes offense, just send me the $ and I'll jump on that CAT!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Roy,

The comments were acknowledgeing you love of Deere and your committment to the brand. Your passon was obvious in your post. I was looking just a bit beyond the passion at the practical information your related which I was in agreement with. If memory serves....primary John Deere colors are Green with Yellow trim.

Sorry for the confusion.

OK...the 790's don't have the yellow trim, BTW.

I do love Deeres...but the first tractor I looked at was a Kubota BX2200. And, a B7500 series would probably fit my needs a bit better then the 790 (size wise).

I'm just real leary of the badge engineered machines. Some may make a go of it...most won't in 5 years or so.

After all, would you buy a Yugo...or a Skoda? Both are fairly popular eastern European cars. Malcolm Bricklin tried to make a go of importing Yugos..and he had a lot of experince in the automotive distribution industry. Now...getting parts for them is a junk yard search.

Well, time to go to work...

( That's your opinion, and you're most certainly entitled to it. However, I'll point out that the actual fact is that if most people agreed with you, that make of tractor would be the top selling brand in the country. It isn't. I think Roy was only pointing out the safest bet for a new tractor owner. If by chance the poster missed, and bought the wrong sized tractor, by going with the opinion of the masses, he could easily sell what he bought without a big loss, and go with something else. Also, the larger the dealer network, the greater the chance of having any issues handled. Just a benefit of going with the opinion of the masses. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif )

Yikes!!! Dargo, maybe you should take down that noble GSD or yours and put up a cow. Just remember all the greats became great by not following the herd...........the pack is where it's at brother. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Budget is a concern (just bought the property, so money's tight). Forgot to mention that I am also looking at some vintage tractors - 8ns and such. I've heard people draw comparisons between them and chinese tractors. Also looked at a few private owner Yanmars grey market ones, but they were too small for what I need. Looking for something in 30-40 hp range, I think. Also considering an older MF, International, Ford utility tractor, but most farmers around here don't want to part with a decent one for a cheap price.

I appreciate the advice given so far - didn't want to start a brand war but wanted opinions. I will still probably investigate most of the brands I mentioned earlier. Thanks to everybody for their comments

Just for a hoot, go over to the China board. There is a guy, Greg G who lives in Western KY. He and I both have the KAMA 454. Nice simple tractor, 45 Hp 4x4, Hi-Lo and shutle shift.

The KAMA is no toy, 5900lb with the loader. Most complaints I see are assembly related. We bought ours from Chip at www.artac.com

Not a problem at all. Just not on my dime. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I'm just not a gambler. There is a casino in my home town, and I've never been there. When I go to Vegas on business trips, I'm not even tempted to play the games. Thanks just the same, but I think I'll just follow what is more likely to be the sure bet for now.

Just think of all the guys that gambled on Kubota so you could safely buy one today as one of the Big Three. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I don't feel like I gambled at all, I know good stuff when I see it, I have no doubt Kioti will be right in the middle of the pack within the next decade. Especially if they stay competitive with their pricing. I guess that makes us trail blazers if it works out, or /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif if it doesn't. LOL

I guess you can't notice quality when you see it. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I also have casino's in my home state and you know what I go a few times a month.
