2 Inch Receiver On PT422 probably 425

I have wanted to have a 2 inch receiver on my PT 422 for some time. My main reason was to be able to attach a boat winch to it for vehicle recover. I wanted something reasoable strong, but with the capability of being removed and to have little if any changes to my PT. (no welding to the PT, but a few holes would be alright. I have attached a picture on the modified receiver. I have cut a slot on each side so it can slide fully on without being stopped by the existing hitch points. I do not feel this is rigid or strong enough by itself.

I cut two 1.5 inch angle irons about 10.25 inches long and drilled a couple of holes in each for 3/8 inch bolts which will be attached to the PT. I may add an additonal bolt in the center of the angle irons if needed.
I also ground some metal away so the the PT hitch brackets would not interfere and the angle irons would be flat against the PT.

That isn't going anywhere. If you are not sure, just weld a small section of tube or similar bracing to each side to make a T out of it for side bracing.

Here is the unit clamped together. The clamp is probably not strong enough, so I plan to weld the angles to the receiver.

Does this seem strong enough (after the welding of course, Clint).

Moss, thanks, I was hoping to get a comment from you.
How about making an H out of it by putting a piece of angle between the other two angles? I could then run one bolt into it. I don't want to get to many bolts, so it can be easily removed.

Bob, is this just a towing device, or you planning on hauling a lot of weight on the receiver. Like one of those tote frames that plug into the receiver for large coolers or camping gear or pressure washer, ect. A regular receiver can stand a tongue weight of around 500 lbs. The unit could be a flat or boxed in tote box. I use mine to sit on , work on, or stand on. You could also use it to add extra weight to the rear. I will try and take a picture of my tote platform today.

Bob, here is a picture of the carry all that someone built, It is a light weight, and it will probably carry around 200 lbs, and has a fold up ramp. Probably cost around $50.00 to build.

I take it that you plan to leave this mounted to the PT all the time, but give you the ability to return it to stock -- other than the two bolt holes.

I think you'll likely find it plenty strong enough, though the real test IMO would be weight in a carrier or something similar, suspended several inches back behind the PT...

IMO, the closer to the PT, the better -- that's why I conceived of my weight box fitting snug against the back of the PT. BTW, I'll get to try it this coming weekend and hopefully get some pics...

I welded this together last night and installed it. It is very strong. When I stand on it there is no flex. Prior to installing the angle irons it would flex 1/4 inch or more on the PT back plate. I have attached a picture. I plan to add a wooden bumper on top. I have to weld a plate to the receiver and then put lag bolts through the plate into the bumper.
One of the strength test is to lift the end of the PT with the boat whinch.

By the way there are four bolts, two at the top and two at the bottom. I may add two in the middle.
I do plan to leave this on most of the time. It will also have a storage box for chains and maybe a weight, or I may just put the whinch on it.

I have attached a picture of the boat whinch. Basically I welded it to a 2 inch tube which fits nicely into the receiver.

Bob. There is all kind of stuff you can put into the 2 in reciever. They even have a plug in potty seat for those times you are far away. Platforms, electric winches, tool carrier, extra weight. I saw this vise mount someone made up. I am sure you will come up with many more. Nice work.

I actually needed the vise a few years back while replacing the septic tank pump. I have a spare vise and may do this. Actually maybe I could weld it to the same bar that the winch is on. Then tie it across the bumper for weight when I am not using it.
I tried lifting the PT with the winch on the receiver and it worked pretty well. Both wheels got off the ground at one time, then the PT rolled back a little bit. See attached. I guess it's strong enough. The 3/8 bolts seem a little small. Any thoughts on this.

Bob. I think I would go with a larger pin, like 5/8, or 3/4 in grade eight.

I checked on the strength of the 3/8 bolt and it is about 2000 pounds. This seems like enought, so for the time being it is low on my list. Of course that means I will probably fix it when I take it off for the next set of modification and paint it. I want to put the wood bumper on.

Attached is a picture of the wooden part of the bumper and the support metal brackets for it. The brackets will actually be welded to the 2 inch receiver and then the wooden bumper will be mounted on top with lag bolts going up through the wood. The metal is some scrap that I had.

I finished the welding in these pictures. At this point I am putting the metal on to hold the bumper. Most people probably will not use the bumper, so the extra metal is optional.
I wish I had added places to attach chains to like on most 2 inch receivers. This would also give tied down while trailering.

Bob, The pin hole looks larger that 5/8 in in the last picture, did you go to a larger hole?

It's stock, but I think it's 3/4 inch. I am going to use grade 8 3/8 inch bolts to connect to the PT. I got some 5/8 inch, but they would make too big a hole.
