That lift cylinder, and piston looks pretty bad since all that junk when through it. If it were me I'd get a new cylinder, piston, and seals.

On the multi-power when it's in high range uses hydraulic pressure, when in high range going down a hill it will let the tractor slowdown using the engine (engine braking). With the multi-power in low range (no hydraulic pressure) the tractor will freewheel down hill (it wont use the engine to slow it down) so you will be using the brakes a lot. With the multi-power working properly you almost don't have to use the brakes very much if you leave it in high range most of the time.

It's a good idea to spend the money on a genuine MF shop manual for your tractor.
