Bear Cat Products - Chipper/Shredders
I bought a Bush Hog brand
chipper/shredder about 10 years ago that looked very much like this model of Bear Cat - I'd guess they were made in the same factory, adjusting for the 10 years difference in models.
Mounted on my JD 870 it did a very nice job for me, but with some draw-backs that led me to replace it. First one was the lack of a chip blower - scrapping the chips out from under it every few minutes is a pain. I'd strongly urge going for a model with a blower if you have any volume of work at all.
Second was the huge task of getting to the
chipper blades for sharpening. They need it pretty often from my experience, and on my old Bush Hog that meant removing a couple of dozen bolts to remove shields and the whole top of the hopper, which was just heavy and awkward enough to be a chore to lift off and back on. It's not clear to me from the photo that this issue still exists, but I'd advise being sure you know what's required to change the blades before buying any
chipper.
I ended up buying the Bear Claw 4"
chipper - see
here - which is very well built, very conservatively rated at 4," and a joy to use. The blades are exposed for sharpening by removing a single bolt. One caution - it's not a shredder, so doesn't deal as well with masses of small branches.
