Any ideas out there on self latching dump gates?

Just move the hinge point forward and the latch will stay locked until you tip the trailer. Another advantage is that the latch opens more and you can as well easily adjust the opening by using the chains seen on the photo

ok 'imna give it a try,,,, i think i'de go to the nearest tractor supply or equivalent and study or even buy a self latching gate lock, they are simple and would at least make a decent model for what you need, just have to upsize it. but honestly the easiest method is a spring and pin, as suggested before.
